For our reference, and to help prevent confusion, here's some useful unit conversions many of us will require frequently:

1 Litre = 0.264172051 US Gallons
1 Litre = 0.219969157 Imperial (UK) Gallons
1 US gallons = 3.7854118 litres
1 Imperial gallons = 4.54609188 litres
US MPG to Imperial MPG = mpg * 1.201168866
Imperial MPG to US MPG = mpg * 0.832673843
Imperial MPG to l/100km = 282.5 / mpg
US MPG to l/100km = 235.2 / mpg
l/100km to Imperial MPG = 282.5 / l/100km
l/100km to US MPG = 235.2 / l/100km

Examples (answers rounded to normal usage accuracy):

To convert UK pence per litre to US dollars per gallon:
81p litre * 3.7854118 = £3.066183558 per US gallon * 1.8 (example exchange rate) = $5.52 gallon

To covert US gallon to UK pence per litre:
$2.00 gallon / 3.7854118 = $0.528344102 litre / 1.8 (example exchange rate) = 29p litre

To convert US 50mpg to UK mpg:
50mpg (US) * 1.201168866 = 60mpg (UK)

To convert UK 30mpg to US mpg:
30mpg (UK) * 0.832673843 = 25mpg (US)
