Crap...given my advancing years I can't remember what I said!! :oops: :cry:

EROEI good? EROEI bad?

He backed up what I said, that it is not used at all in the industry to decide if projects should go ahead or not.
Then he fleshed it out a little better, as I have done in the past, by saying much of the equipment is leased, has been paid for years ago and can still be used for more years. He explained a few more things but I can't remember it all exactly.
Probably something about the lifespan of fields and not knowing exactly how much you're going to get when you start so how can you use EROEI or maybe that's what I said in an earlier post, LOL.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('AirlinePilot', '
') I would never claim to have maddog's knowledge, just as he probably doesn't know how to shoot a CAT III approach to zero visibility conditions in a large airliner.

I know how to sit in the back of a commercial airliner, do up my seatbelt and be polite to the stews when I order a drink. :-D

About what I expected. You two qualify as a significant portion of the experts around here nowadays, so its nice to see that this EROEI hysteria among peakers is as mythological in nature as it appeared.

Just because EROEI isn't 'used' in the oil industry doesn't mean that diminishing returns don't apply to oil exploration and production. It's very well known that fewer and fewer massive discoveries are being made over time and production costs for the deep sea oil are higher.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('shortonsense', '
')Are you saying you don't already KNOW how the transition is effecting things like, say, the structural change to personal electrically powered transport? Or the scale of the exponential growth in renewable sources generating said electricity? Have you ever heard of...the SUN?

I just found another wind farm this weekend, while wandering the Comanche grasslands. The things are growing like weeds.

Oh I'm sorry, as stated in my original post, I was talking about VIABLE alternatives that would allow us to continue business as usual (i.e: unfettered growth).

I completely agree. And this "diminishing returns" has been going on since 1940, if not earlier. When people post of this topic, they act as though its a more modern effect, I don't know why.

I'm not sure I understand the link. BAU has built within it the concept of business cycles which most certainly are NOT growth, recessions and depressions, crashes, etc etc. And unfettered implies, well, unfettered, and every market system on this planet is fettered, by rules and taxes, sometimes commanded by governments, etc etc. Is there ANY such thing as an unfettered market, or even unfettered growth in a system which doesn't always grow?

And if those alternatives I mentioned aren't viable, someone needs to tell the large manufacturers, consumers, utilities and governments building all these things to stop!
