80 percent of Americans say they do not trust the government

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'N')early 80 percent of Americans say they do not trust the government to do what is right, expressing the highest level of distrust in Washington in half a century, according to a public opinion survey.

What I want to know is, who are the 20%?

And yet most members of the Tea Party think the taxes they pay are fair.

The American government is only looking out for the richest 1% of Americans. I am surprised anyone at all trusts this government.

Governments are made up of human beings, a morally flawed creature that seeks after its own interests. Why anyone anywhere trusts a Government would be a much better question.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Alfred Tennyson', 'W')e are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Yup.

A big section of that would be "public schools" which is of course the govt's greatest advocate. Nice cushy jobs too.....nice pay, 10,000 holidays a year, summers off and paid for, can't be fired (tenure), can't go out of business, can't be bought out....it's the parasite's wildest wet dream.

Here's the executive summary: Distrust, Discontent, Anger and Partisan RancorThe People and Their Government on the Pew website.

You can also get the Complete Report (PDF).

I would like to see a comparison with other countries - are they as broken as the US?

America was founded on not trusting the GubMint. So, this being a news article seems like a usual slow news day. Yawn.

Hi.
Actually people tend not to trust one another and aim to ignore, avoid, and/or exploit one another. The government is made up of people so mistrust of the government follows. Also the greater the imbalance in power, the greater the secrecy, the greater the sense of difference, and the less interaction, the greater the potentials for abuses. Also, having the elements of decisions, and associated actions broken up encourages folks not to feel responsible.

I don't think the government has earned any trust. It also seems to me that anyone who is putting any trust in the government (especially government obligations like medicare and social security) is going to be very disappointed the next few years. I'll even go a step farther, those who trust in any part of the established financial, government, and social order any higher up than (maybe) county level in most places will be sorely disappointed.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('JimG', 'A')merica was founded on not trusting the GubMint. So, this being a news article seems like a usual slow news day. Yawn.

Check out this interactive graph Public Trust in Government: 1958-2010 (Pew). Click on the column at left or mouse over the yellow dots.

It was 78% in 1965, 20% today.

70% of Republicons trusted gov in 2001, 8% in 2010. Fickle lot.

I couldn't get the link to show the chart so just guessing here but does it show a marked drop between 65 and 75? Something about wasting 55000 good men for nothing if I recall correctly. If the government is mistrusted it is only because they have earned it.

Yea I think that's a good bet, course in all fairness liberals seem ok with government when they are in power too.
