The paychecks at all the parasitic bureaucracies is out of control. Look at universities and all the useless (and high-paid) jobs they have -- chancelors of this and that, department heads, then directors, it's insane! This useless, highly paid bureaucracy even exists in small community colleges.

Then you have the county jobs.. don't get me started on that. Then the airport authority pay, all the state government panels and port authorities and yadda yadda, it's all a parasitic drain on the economy.

And lastly, the nonprofits and charities.. another big scam (yes charities help a lot of folks, but why do so many bureaucrats have to get rich in the process?).

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'P')ublic employees have become the new American elite. In the past, Government workers earned less money but had slightly better job security and benefits than Americans working in the private sector. These days, government workers not only earn more than other Americans, but they have vastly superior benefits, including pension plans that often allow them to retire as early as age 50 with 100 percent or more of their final year's salary. These pensions often to $100,000 a year and come with cost of living adjustments and free lifetime medical care. Getting a government job and sticking with it is like winning the lottery. This plundering of treasuries, made possible by aggressive union tactics and spineless politicians, results in higher taxes and massive debts that ultimately will be borne by our grandchildren. The current situation is "unsustainable." The problem goes beyond finances. Government unions protect even the worst public employees from accountability. Schools don't attempt to fire incompetent teachers-and union protections make it nearly impossible to even fire ones accused of abuse and other misdeeds. As government gets bigger and more powerful, government officials have more uncontrolled power over the rest of us-to enrich and protect themselves at the expense of the public good. The public's servants have truly become the public's masters.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('TheAntiDoomer', 'T')his is all pure nonsense. The REAL reason government employees make more than the average person is that the government does very few remedial jobs anymore, such as cleaning crews, cafeteria workers etc. A large majority of governmetn workers are far more educated and experienced that your average person, so OF COURSE they make more than the average worker. Ask any reasonable person like a a IT professional in the DC area, and they will absolutly laugh in your face if you tell them they can make more in gov than the private sector.

As an IT pro who handles backbone systems at a $9 billion hi-tech facility and supervises other programmers, that is utter and complete horse excrement. You have no idea what you're talking about. I make much more than average for a programmer/database administrator and federal workers in equivalent positions still make about 20-30% more than me (including their benefits). Salaries for federal government IT employees have really gone up in the past few years.

I'm like Roy, I won't work for the government out of principle right now.

Speak for yourself Jotapay, but I know SEVERAL IT pros in the DC area who make signifigantly more than their gov counterparts.

I'm not saying that it doesn't happen. Of course there will be a few IT folks who make $200K+, especially around DC. But go look at the federal government jobs website. Most of the jobs for which I'm qualified are in the $115-$130K (base) range. That is about 20-30% more than what I make right now. If they get overtime, the gap would only widen even more.

The reason government employees are payed more is because the organizations are not bound by profit and loss. Government programs lose money year after year yet never die.
