A New Drive For States Rights

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')hether it’s correctly called a movement, a backlash or political theater, state declarations of their rights — or in some cases denunciations of federal authority, amounting to the same thing — are on a roll.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'G')ov. Mike Rounds of South Dakota, a Republican, signed a bill into law on Friday declaring that the federal regulation of firearms is invalid if a weapon is made and used in South Dakota.

On Thursday, Wyoming’s governor, Dave Freudenthal, a Democrat, signed a similar bill for that state. The same day, Oklahoma’s House of Representatives approved a resolution that Oklahomans should be able to vote on a state constitutional amendment allowing them to opt out of the federal health care overhaul.

It's good to see an effort towards decentralized government.

Just curious, are those states that leech off Federal Government ( oh sorry, from other states and ability of Federal Government to borrow and rob other countries) are also in this move for "States Rights" ?

Ironically, a lot of Red States that contribute less to Fed Gov and get more. Even so, there is so much waste that they would still be better off.

If you contribute $10 and Massachussets chips in $2 out of the $12 in Fed spending for your state, are you really getting $12 of benefit?

Historically most taxes were state and local, and spent in the state or locality. Today more taxes are paid to Washington who then doles them back to the states with strings attached. Personally I'd like to see Wyoming refuse ever dollar of federal support, then cease complying with every federal mandate passed over the last forty years. We could do so by turning our interstates into toll roads, and charging trucks about $25 to use them.

I bet many states which benefit from federal programs such as the US military will want to enjoy keeping the military bases. TX is one of these. Some Texans not only want states rights but want to secede. But I bet they still want to benefit from US military. And any other federal programs. :|

Well actually its not always true, Tyler-JC gave an excellent analysis of that (if its his) . I guess I outtrolled myself.

well you would still get more than 10 for sure. In conditional units , of course, whatever they are.

No. You lose 10, and someone in Mass loses 2. Production is wealth, not consumption.

About $25? Thats Wyoming's deficit divided by a number of passing trucks through interstates? Don't you think the number will change a bit, after introduction of this fee?

well sure, I said conditional units. If the Federal government will hire a Political Correctness professors for each school in your state and will pay them 100K a head they will still count it as a fed spending in your state. On the other hand, if you get 100k for scratching your tongue a few hours a week...

Total fed and state fuel tax for Wyoming is $.392 per gallon...

Our average truck 6.1 mpg due to grades and wind

Total distance east to west I 80 401 miles.

Total present cost to drive across wyoming one time ...

39.2 divided by 6.1 times 401 = $25.77 so whats new, a discount?

You think Wyoming is expensive.. try New york state.

IF the toll road is state owned and exempt from other taxation as some are... I'll come out ahead at 25$ If it is a double taxation like the New York throughway..I'll avoid Wyoming like I do New York.

Our 2 trucks paid 14,000 dollars in fuel taxes for the 12 months of last year.

Before you think you understand you might want to see what IFTA is... much money is collected in one state for another via fuel taxes.. This skews the numbers on donor/user basis of taxes to the fed government. Many trucks do not buy fuel in Wyoming because they collect too little tax at the pump meaning you as the trucker OWE them to the states you drive in using fuel bought in Wyoming.

So you buy fuel in a higher tax state "over paying" your taxes on the fuel you will burn in Wyoming leaving a residual positive IFTA balance to offset the ton mile taxes of the really greedy states like New York, Kentucky, and New Mexico for instance which collect not only a fuel tax but also asses a second ton mile tax of 12 , 13, or even 14 cents a mile for each mile traveled on top of the fuel tax.

Each quarter BILLIONS of dollars are shifted from state to state as trucks file their IFTA reports.
