$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('biofuel13', 'W')ow, I've got exploding head syndrome! I've had this happen several times over the past few years. Usually its when I'm sleeping on the couch. Sounds like the entire roof has been blown off the house from the attic up. I live in a really old house so I always kind of assumed that the house was making some kind of major adjustment from temperature changes, although this seemed much much louder. Seeing this thread has been a relief!
Isn't it great when you experience something strange like this, keep it to yourself, wonder about it for years, and then... voila! an article appears?
I could swear my loud sleep bangs are associated with a brain wave change - from alpha to beta, or whatever. It only happens to me as I am drifting off. Occasionally, one of these loud BANGS! are really quite powerful. Maybe not as stunning as an M-80 would be, but a BIG mental sound.
I don't hear the loud "crash" that some people are reporting. Mine are always bang sounds (like a large firecracker going off), or snapping and popping sounds that are less intense. I've never been confused about them (at least not for long upon being jolted awake); I've always somehow known it was a brain phenomenon.
