Freedom Tower wrt Peak Oil?

Postby clv101 » Wed 05 Jan 2005, 19:36:14

What does peak oil mean for the replacement for the World Trade Centre, the Freedom Tower?

http://www.factmonster.com/ipka/A0903568.html
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'O')n July 4, 2004, New York Governor Pataki, New Jersey Governor McGreevey, and New York City Mayor Bloomberg laid the cornerstone for Freedom Tower. The skyscraper, estimated to cost $1.5 billion, is expected to be ready for its first occupants by late 2008, while construction on the site in general is expected to last through 2015.

Is there demand in New York for the extra office space now? Will there be demand for it 2008-2015?

Can the $1.5bn price tag be afforded?

The timescales seems to clash awfully with the expected collapse of US economy not to mention peak oil.

Does the Freedom Tower have a future?

i've never liked it so fine with me if they are forced to stop construction. it's a monument to corporate greed as far as i'm concerned, and the shamelessness of the current administration.

I wonder if the tower couldn't be a canary in the coal mine of sorts - if they start building it, then suspend construction, it seems likely that Peak would be upon us.

Oh, they'll build it. They've played up the symbolism too much. People would riot if they cancelled the project.

MY worry is what's gonna be sacrified so they'll have the resources to build the thing.

Maybe they want another tall one so they can fly another plane into it when another "terrorist attack" is needed.

Does seem a bit pointless, almost as pointless as bidding for the Olympics in 2012. But Tony Blair wouldn't waste money on that if he knew about PO would he.......?(doh! )

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '2') Subway Lines Crippled by Fire; Long Repair Seen
By SEWELL CHAN

Published: January 25, 2005

Two of the city's subway lines - the A and the C - have been crippled and may not return to normal capacity for three to five years after a fire Sunday afternoon in a Lower Manhattan transit control room that was started by a homeless person trying to keep warm, officials said yesterday.

The blaze, at the Chambers Street station used by the A and C lines, was described as doing the worst damage to subway infrastructure since the terrorist attack of Sept. 11, 2001. It gutted a locked room that is no larger than a kitchen but that contains some 600 relays, switches and circuits that transmit vital information about train locations.

The story isn't clear but it could be PO related in that

Sunday, January 30, 2005

We tend to forget about homeless people, those with addictions and mental health problems. They're invisible to us; they're a low priority on the public agenda.

As long as they confine their problems to themselves, or their families, we really don't want to hear about them or spend our tax dollars on them.

But sometimes the problems of the homeless, the mentally ill and substance-addicted have a big impact on the lives of hundreds and thousands of people.

Early last week came a story about a subway fire in New York City that will cripple, for about six months, transportation on two lines used daily by more than a half-million people. It will take millions of dollars and several years to completely restore service to the A and C lines that serve Manhattan. The damage was the result of a fire that gutted a switching control room last Sunday.

It is widely believed that the blaze was started when a homeless person, trying to stay warm in a subway tunnel on the second day of a severe snowstorm, set fire to a grocery cart full of wood and trash. That person has not been found.

Still questions surrounding the Freedom Tower... with peak oil in mind I don't think it'll be built.

Funny, I was thinking about the exact same thing today, 'will they still build the freedom tower'. I'm guessing.... they'll start it, but not complete it.

The Freedom Tower is the last statue of the American Empire. The Freedom Tower will be started soon. It will be completed. And it will remain completely empty until it falls apart.

The Freedom Tower is like those statues on Easter Island. We exist to build things like it. We must build it in order to justify our existence. However, the economy will be crashing by the time the thing is finished. Therefore, it will look beautiful. It will be a monument to our greatness...and it will be utterly useless. :-D

I don't think it will uninhabited for all of time after it is erected. It may be vacant of renters, but I bet the homeless will take advantage of that nice shiny structure after there no longer exists the means to keep them out of it.

Maybe they should drill for oil on the old WTC site.

Judging by the dissatisfaction among the parties in control of the WTC reconstruction project, more delay is likely. I think there is a real risk this thing will never get built. If they start in 2006 and use public money, maybe. But based on ASPO projections and likely economic impacts of peak oil, this thing will be rendered unaffordable not much beyond that.

Wasn't the Empire State Building constructed during the first Great Depression?
