Can The World Stave Off the Worst Effects?

Unread postby jacksonp » Wed 10 Feb 2010, 01:19:31

Hello friends
I have read Can The World Stave Off the Worst Effects? on google when i was surfing on google.
I don't think that any of the 'bad' peak oil scenarios have any hope of giving the environment a break. Oil is extremely energy dense, and we're an extremely rapacious species. If you look at places where oil is relatively cheap (compared to income), you'll find protected wildlands and funded ecological efforts. In places where oil is expensive (compared to income), you'll find over-harvested soils, over-harvested trees, etc.
what you think?

We have 3 major fossil fuels. Oil, gas, and coal. If we go through all three of these, the climate will be wrecked beyond all comprehension, even if we leave all the trees alone. No. Peak oil is not the savior for the environment. In order to save the environment, people need to make it a conscious priority.

And this is PO. When we have passed the asymptote of Oil
Consumption, gas and coal (coal especially) will no longer be available either in the quantities assumed to be some kind of bridge fuel.

Add that Societies will collapse, voluntarily or forced to meet the
new minimum energy production profiles.

Then, of course the Brown Export Land Model which details how
energy exports will be severely curtailed to meet 'domestic' needs;
will only speed up collapse.

Civilization is a cool game. I usually build a massive military and go for a conquest victory. Diplomacy always breaks down when you really need the black goo and the others know it.
