Try some Valerian Root. It's what they use to make Valium.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('lateStarter', 'M')y comments on melatonin: the stuff helped me fall to sleep but not stay asleep. I was using the 5 mg doses for a while before I stopped. I will admit however that while I was on it, I had some of the most lucid dreams ever! It was like watching porn on the best HD setup you can find... It was actually pretty schocking, even for me! YMMV.

is it a common effect?

I'm pretty sure valium isn't made from valerian. :| link

Valerian smells like a disgusting old sock, and left me over-sedated the following day. So I don't prefer it. I have had better success with lemon balm and passion-vine, both of which grow more easily for me here than valerian. But valerian is stronger and may work for more people. Of course you should do some research before taking any drug, even herbs. Some herbs are quite toxic, and can interact with other medications you might be taking.

The only drug I use is alcohol. No aspirin, nothing.

I don't pollute my body with witchdoctor crap from the greedy pharmaceutical company vampires.

I've actually started to have lucid dreams in the past 2 years or so. My body doesn't need to sleep more than 6 hours now, it seems. I'll wake up at 4 or 5am, and not be able to go back to sleep. But I will dream in a conscious but mentally-sedated state for an hour or more until I get out of bed. It's pretty insane.

Same here. I find myself waking up way before dawn ever since my doctor took me off sleeping tablets but luckily I don't feel tired. Maybe sleeping tablets were all wrong for me.

Hm, even taking these pills "occasionally" raises your risk of sudden death by 10-15%. $this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')hose who took sleeping pills nightly had a greater risk of death than those who took them occasionally, but the latter risk was still 10 to 15 percent higher than it was among people who never took sleeping pills. Sleeping pills appear unsafe in any amount, Kripke writes in his online book, "The Dark Side of Sleeping Pills." link
Add to that, it's not even a good idea to be sleeping more than 6 or 7 hours per night:$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '&')quot; There is really no evidence that the average 8-hour sleeper functions better than the average 6- or 7-hour sleeper," Kripke says, on the basis of his ongoing psychiatric practice with patients along with research, including the large study of a million adults (called the Cancer Prevention Study II).

And he suspects that people who sleep less than average make more money and are more successful.

The Cancer Prevention Study II even showed that people with serious insomnia or who only get 3.5 hours of sleep per night, live longer than people who get more than 7.5 hours.
link
So.. if ambien ups your premature mortality risk by 15%, and not even an insomniac really needs to be taking it (insomniacs live longer), then why the heck are 25% of the American population taking these pills???

One of my best friends has taken ambien for several years. One time he told me a story about how he got up one night, walked downstairs and proceeded to cook a steak dinner on his grill at like 3 am. He ate some then put the rest of it in the refrigerator. In the morning he woke up, went downstairs, looked in the fridge, noticed the steak and asked his wife how it got there. He had no direct recollection of how it happened. The stuff I've relayed is stuff he pieced together on his own after the fact.

Seems like pretty crazy stuff. I would not put it in my body unless I was like my friend and got as much sleep in a week as I get in a night.
