Somebody order this guy a copy of Overshoot.

This has to be on the all-time clueless BAU articles list for posterity.

I've read Kotkin's articles before. Professional ostrich, no less no more.

You're right though, this one is top shelf.

How's the WSJ these days since Rupert Murdoch has started turning it into the Washington Times?

If the world is to ever reach a stable situation it will mean that there will not be an ever-greater number of young people than older people.

Age groups will be evenly distributed but it should be no problem for older people if they have spent their younger years wisely saving and preparing for life after retirement. Of course, retirement need not necassarily occur at at 50, 60 or even 70 years. Many can and should remain productive and self-supporting well beyond the age of 70 years.

The natural way is not stable but rather involves repeating cycles of growth and collapse.

Either way, the author of that article doesn't have a clue.

Not really "collapse" if you're talking about populations of living organisms, more like cycles of increase and decrease. Collapse is a feature of civilizations.

TPTB must have put out the order to discuss population growth over the long term being essential to pay for health care services. Here in Australia in today's news we have the PM ranting about almost doubling our population by 2050 for exactly this reason. Immediately on release of this, Australia's top electronics entrepreneur, Dick Smith counters with an argument about quality of life and carrying capacity.

Future Australians could face starvation: Dick Smith: http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010 ... =australia

Rudd warns of massive hikes in health costs:

Both seem to be expecting some version of BAU ad-infinitum.

We oldsters are just going to have to suck it up and learn how to take care of ourselves and each other instead of insisting the young reproduce in order to generate more slaves to support us.

Tell that to the rabid gray fox population around here. All the little baby foxes seeing their mommy and daddy foxes foaming at the mouth and biting Mr. Human. That has got to be pretty scary. CHAOS
