Nice videos timmac, still haven't got around to finishing Fallout 3 now that I think about it.

Here's a nice video of a city council meeting:

I finished Fallout 3 a few months ago and started again a new, trying new stuff.

The other day, I unleashed Roy Phillips and his feral ghoul army upon the rich hoity-toity residents of Tenpenny Tower and watched them all get torn from limb to limb, etc.

It is too bad we don't have feral ghouls to unleash on Goldman Sachs and company.

This revenge fetishism here on peakoil.com is pointless. it won't put any more oil in the ground, replenish aquifers, restore biodiversity, sequester carbon, or add to soil fertility. All it does is give some people a short-term high. I know it's the winter and all, but I think you should spend more time thinking about your permaculture setup and not lynch mobs.

LOL. I got it figured out already. I have a visual image in my head of what my place needs to look like in 10 years and I have a pretty good idea of what I need to do this year towards that goal.

Late January to early February is concerned with formally doing a circuit/socket chart for my house, rewiring the damaged outlets, cleaning and staining the wooden deck, repairing miscellaneous stuff like my wife's banker's lamp and other stuff.

Mid-February to early March is when I start ordering more seeds, rhubarb roots, thuja green giant, rosa rugosa & hazelnut bushes. I'll probably extend the southeastern herb garden (which right now is just several dozen lemon balm plants) and formally create the brick-reinforced raised bed to protect the southern part of the house from water runoff from the southern woods.

The northeastern herb garden is fairly extensive with perennials like bee balm, oregano, sage, horehound, mugwort, wormwood, lovage, tarragon, lavender, etc etc.

Early-March to April is when I try to fully expand to a deer-proof fenced-off 4,000 sqFt raised bed biointensive-system.

I don't know about a short-term high... I created a save game file before I unleashed the ghouls so I can do it again any time I feel like it!

By the way does ANYONE know a Piper-genus (related to black pepper) species that will grow in zone 7 climate? Most I have seen so far is zone 8, I want to use them as a substitute for ivy as a ground cover, as well as harvesting seeds as a pepper substitute.

Does it have to be pepper? Here's a pepper substitute: http://www.pfaf.org/database/plants.php ... m+simulans

It's a shrub though, not a groundcover.

Thanks. Actually that was the first NON-piper substitute I found early on (researching Japanese pepper since a lot of stuff in Japan can grow here). I may end up getting that, regardless.

I got sugar-substitute stevia wintering in the basement under grow lights. I plan on expanding it this year, with some of it being used as an annual (keeping seeds) and wintering some of it as perennials.

I'm trying to come up with as many substitutes for stuff as I can (stuff that can grow in Maryland----zone 7). Still considering my idea of trying to come up with a zone 7 hardy olive tree cultivar. I mean someone came up with a successful grapefruit tree in Maryland that can survive.

People fond of Sci Fi and that has been around for a while, may remember a series of TV shows and movies of Dr Quatermass, it was scary like hell, back then :)
Look at the image they have back in the 70´s about the future in the UK, Some striking similarities with Children of Men.

If you remember the movie "Quatermass and the Pit" aka "5 Million Years to Earth" Quatermass and Dr Roney discuss what humans would do if faced with a threat such as climate change, and Dr Roney says "just keep squabbling as usual" (paraphrasing). It's one of my very favorite movies. :)

Meh, who cares about America when they're so many other countries we can rebuild -- Iraq, Afghanistan, and now Haiti.

If the Michiganers would work for $2 a day, then maybe the .gov would fix the place up.

I've read that hazelnut oil can be used as an olive oil substitute, at least for frying. Not sure what it would do in a spaghetti or pesto sauce.

Any place could get dicey soon. I watched the youtube vids of Detroit and saw very little glass in the buildings. A lot of houses had been burned.

My Grandmother used to live in the South Bronx, and it looked like that.

We got her out of there, but the whole place was a wreck not long after.

That was in the 80's.

It makes me think that the only way to stay in a neighborhood like that is to have bulletproof shutters and kevlar house wrap.

Most people made the choice to abandon it.
Deep in the mud and slime of things, even there, something sings.

We have some poor sections of Upstate NY cities with similar issues. When industry, supporting businesses, the middle class, the upper middle class and wealthy moved out, it left pockets of cities with many century old vacant, abandoned or condemned structures, lead, asbestos, industrial mill waste and a much smaller tax base.

Many of the people that remained behind were poor, uneducated, unemployable renters, or poor and fixed income homeowners that couldn't afford to cut and run. Many single family homes were cut up into 2/3/4 Plus unit multi-family homes, then rented to low income tenants.

Many of the vacant tax auction properties were purchased by out-of-town slumlords, then rented to welfare tenants, criminals, thugs, sex offenders, disabled or retarded tenants.

Public housing projects, slumlords renting to Section 8 tenants, welfare motels and liberal welfare benefits attracted even more poor, uneducated, unemployable renters to these regions.

As tax base decreased and property values declined, cities were forced to raise tax rates and cut services which caused even more businesses and homeowners to move to neighboring towns, villages and suburbs.

In some of these cities, Medicaid spending alone consumes well over 50 percent of property tax revenue. The high property taxes alone prevent many people from renovating, building or selling.
