Nothing about the US food industry shocks me anymore. My niece worked for Hillshire Farms at
a brat plant. When they are finished with the pigs nothing is left as every ounce of the pig is processed.

She can no longer eat brats.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Jotapay', 'I')"m definitely going to check out my local processing places. I know there are some folks that raise and sell organic buffalo around here, but I'll have to find out who they are.

I usually go to Costco to get my meat. They use their own cattle lots, evidently. I know nothing about the way they are raised and how unhealthy it is. But the cuts of meat are huge (butterfly pork chops, ribeyes, T-bones, sirloins) and really good quality. I never eat ground beef anywhere unless they say it's organic.

Does anyone know anything untoward about the Costco butcher's meat? The cuts are far superior than what you get in the grocery store here (HEB, etc.) and much cheaper. All cuts are really thick. Sirloin is $5/#, Ribeye is $7/#, Pork Loin is $2.30-2.50/#. The meat is really good quality, but I wonder if anyone else knows more

Don't know anything about Costco, but here in Burnet, Texas (45 minutes northwest of you) we have a local doctor (my doctor) named Dr. Robinson. He has a ranch outside of town, and a rather large herd of Buffalo. The other day he said he had a buffalo roast for Christmas day. His number is Jere Robinson, MD Shepperd Medical-Surgical Clinic 512-756-2784. As far as I know, he sells Buffalo (he's also a doomer and PO aware). A pretty cool guy all around.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Sixstrings', 'Y')ou may have a point there. Even though dog scrap trimmings are crawling with e coli, before it hits your table it is wrung in a centrifuge, bathed in ammonia, and (hopefully) fully cooked. --snip--
So, I'm still bothered that we're eating what we used to consider only fit for dogs, just to save Walmart and McDonalds the 3 cents per pound. I guess it makes sense we're eating this now, since dog food these days comes form China (remember all that bad food that was killing dogs?), and we give our kids toxic lead Chinese toys, and our walls are toxic Chinese drywall.
guess you don't want to know the truth about the produce, then. I get so tired of listening to the sheeple complain they don't want it if it was grown outside of the US (the last ten cases of food-born human illness were cause by US grown produce). Cantalope, green onions, spinach, etc.

I'm sure this is entirely coincidental:$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]Some 390 tons of U.S. ground beef recalled
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Some 390 tons of ground beef produced by a California meat packer, some of it nearly two years ago, is being recalled for fear of potentially deadly E. coli bacterium tainting, U.S. officials said on Monday.

The beef was produced by Huntington Meat Packing Inc of Montebello, California, and shipped mainly to California outlets, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's food safety arm said. An initial problem, in ground beef shipped by the plant from January 5 to January 15, was discovered during a regular safety check, the Food Safety and Inspection Service said.

It said it had received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of the recalled products. During a follow-up review of the company's records, government inspectors determined additional products produced and shipped in 2008 to be of concern because they may have been contaminated with E.coli, the service said in a notice on its web site.

This batch was produced from February 19, 2008, to May 15, 2008. It also had been shipped to distribution centers, restaurants and hotels within California, the notice said. "While these products are normally used fresh, the establishment is taking this action out of concern that some product may still be frozen and in commerce," it said.

E. coli is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause kidney failure in the most serious cases. link

After reading this thread I am so darn glad to be a vegetarian. Hamburger eaters are really skating on thin ice.
