One of the other topics besides PO that I have followed is the potential for a global influenza pandemic. This distinct possibility has received quite a bit of mainstream press in the last year, most excrutiatingly alarming. Very scary stuff indeed.
You may have heard about Bird Flu, Marburg, or even the recent release of H2N2 via testing kits, but the WSN/33 story is even scarier. Never mind the fact that Bird Flu may have evolved through recombination into human to human transmission, meaning the pandemic might be at our doorstep. But WSN/33 should scare you even sillier...Why?
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')n December (2004), somebody from one of South Korea's veterinary schools did what hundreds of virus-hunters do the world over: he or she e-mailed to GenBank the genetic details of newly identified viruses. In this case, the posting said, six new strains of influenza had been found in local pigs. Each of the strains were genetically manipulated and contained genetic bits of an avian virus unlike those now prompting separate bird flu concerns.
Worse, there were large segments of a flu bug dubbed WSN/33, a human flu virus altered in 1933 in a laboratory by infecting mice, resulting in a strain that kills mouse brain cells. The original 1933 human virus was related to that which caused the 1918 pandemic flu, killing an estimated 50 million people. Nothing even remotely like the WSN/33 flu has circulated in the world since 1956, and this particular WSN-avian flu combination is not known to have ever occurred naturally, so most of the global population would have little or no immunity to the virus. Since neither the particular bird flu strain nor the WSN/33 flu were known to exist outside of laboratories, one Internet journal concluded that "these sequences could represent a military experiment that resulted in an unplanned release. Moreover, at this point, bioterrorism cannot be ruled out."
scary_nearmiss_shows_bioterrorism_vulnerabilities And this is coming from the CFR!
But what isn't told is the fact that the WHO really hasn't been following up on this story, and 9 more samples WSN/33 have been found in pigs in Korea...and one well-informed poster stated they could not imagine a worse place for a known deadly HUMAN influenza virus to which most humans have no resistance is inside a pig to mutate and recombine...but the WHO will have to address the new data tomorrow...
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'R')ecombinomics Commentary May 4, 2005
Tomorrow WHO will have a chance to visit what they have termed "nonsense" (aka WSN/33) in swine in Korea. However, the data will be overwhelming and the "nonsense" will be alarmingly real. What others have called a "scary near miss" was a direct hit, right between the eyes of the swine industry in Korea. The story will unfold on many fronts.
The sequences in the swine should provide a trail linking back the WSN/33 human lab virus from 1933 to its source. There is a biological trail, which should have been pursued six months ago. WHO was presented with very solid evidence of reassortment and recombination between human WSN/33 and Korean avian H9N2 genes. Instead, they spent the past 6 months trying to prove that the WSN/33 sequences were lab errors. Reports on the sequences were called "speculation" and the non-press release from WHO concluded
I strongly suggest that each of you take the time to read through this site thoroughly (such as the "What's New", and the "In the News" sections and the posting boards), even do a google search on any of these terms, and you will see what may be coming...I personally have taken these and other reports seriously enough to draft an emergency bug-out plan. PO is a long slow contraction with likely painful and combative adjustnments ultimately leading to sustainibility, but a viral pandemic is like a lightning strike that accomplishes it far more quickly...
One should keep in mind the comment by a certain current member of Great Britain's monarchy when asked if there was reincarnation..
