Do you select the cheapest flight?
Do you select the expensive flight?
People want cheap goods and services. If a company can cut costs without cutting quality, it will. It doesn't look like the low wages of airline pilots are in any way reducing the quality of my flight.
If poorly paid pilots start crashing their planes more often, I might change my mind. But so far, so good. I feel perfectly save on an airplane. Safer, in fact, than I feel when I'm driving.
The Air Line Pilots Association, International has 50,000 members. To give each of them a $10,000 pay raise would cost half a billion dollars. Most airlines are already on the verge of bankruptcy, that could push some of them over the edge. Is it worth it? I guess it depends whether or not you're an airline pilot.

How do you determine "too often?" That plane that went down in New York, it turns out the copilot was exhausted because she was too poor to live in New York state, and so had to actually commute from I think Washington State. And she couldn't even afford to have a shared apartment nearby, where she could sleep. This pilot ending up getting her sleep on the pilots' lounge couch. She made such little money that at one point she even had to get an extra part time job as a waitress.
Both pilots were criticized for having "personal conversations" just before the crash. As it turns out, they were complaining about their job and how hard it was to live on these poverty wages.
Given that most crashes are due to pilot error, don't you think pilots ought to at least be paid enough to afford an apartment where they can get some sleep?
