Outsourced and seeking new career recommendations.

Unread postby hermit » Thu 07 Jan 2010, 15:18:30

After getting a useless university degree, I fell into computers, which has paid my bills for the last 12 years.

Now, the party's over, as I'm being outsourced.

I can't get another computer job in the area, as most other other computer work has already been outsourced overseas. I have no other useful skills, other than being a gardener and parent. I am a good learner, and start a cabinetmaking night-course in a few weeks.

I don't mind the idea of trade-work, but sitting at a desk for 12 years has weakened me and caused chronic back problems.

Nonetheless, I will need to support my family - The only thing I can hope to do is to land a couple of retail jobs, perhaps at home depot and a garden center.

Not really sure how to re-invent myself, and am seeking ideas.

You folks always have great ideas, and I'm hoping you can throw a few my way.

Would really like some ideas.

How about one of the millions of new "green Jobs" that Obama has created with the trillion dollars of stimulus bill spending?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Jotapay', 'W')here do you live? All the computer jobs are gone??

Montana area.

Most of the computer jobs are gone, yes. I administer servers. It's a fairly skilled job, but one that can self taught from a book - And there's plenty of people in the third world who have done just that, and will work for cheaper than me.

There are a few jobs left, very few, but so many jobless vying for them - Guys like me are a dime a dozen.

The other side of computers, PC-repair, is dominated by kids who have a passion for gizmo of the week, which I just don't.

All the computer jobs are gone for the incompetent people, the half assed programmers, the half assed designers, the half assed network admins. But those who have actual talent and actual knowledge, are not having trouble finding work.

Hello Hermit, sorry to hear of the outsourcing and how it affects you and your family. I run garden centers here in the Chicagoland region, and I want to tell you that specialized retail (which garden centers "are") are not just for anyone. You must be physically fit, able to lug bushes and shrubs around, load them into cars, trucks, etc. (you have to unload orders too.) Do you drive a forklift? That's always a plus, when one has to unload trucks.

Do you know the plants of your region, and what will survive there?Do you have an eye for color and design? Do you know the latest product intros in retail sales that are driving this multi-billion dollar industry?

How are your people/management skills? How are you at delegating? Do you live out in the sticks, or are there large home/garden centers near you? (NOT the big boxer's either, "Independents".) That will tell me if there *is* a market for you to even work in!

A lot of scuttlebut in the Industry (and I am going to a large trade show here in Chicago on the 20th of this month) says they are laying off folks right and left. It takes a bit more now than to just show up with a t shirt, gloves and workboots and say "I'll take a job". You must KNOW horticulture, design, be able to SELL products right and left. You must boost sales for the company you work for, and that is only done when one knows that industry, and the demographic you are selling to. There's a lot to know about.

*Insecticides, miticides, fungicides, what do you know about them? What goes on which trees, bushes, etc. and at what time of the year, or what time of the day?
*Pruning equipment. Name each one and what kind of cuts they are used for.
*What growing Zone are you in? What type of soil do we have here in this State? Name 2 soil amendments.
....these are the types of questions to be thrown at you in a 2nd interview. (at least the ones *I* conduct!

It can be done, you just have to know your place within each industry you are applying for.

Good luck!

So, your immediate need is to find any kind of work to pay the bills. Home Depot would be a good employer, as would Costco, or your
local city (grounds keeper, or parks and recreation, maybe?)

If you are interested in the field, anything to do with physical therapy, home health care, etc. will be in big demand with an aging
population. You could probably take night or day classes at a local college or technical institute. You wouldn't have to get a degree
in the field; even the equivalent of a two-year program could land you a job as a physical therapy aide, for example.

Sell pickaxes and shovels to the New Gold Rush participants.

By that I mean, sell people what they wish to have, not what you think they should have.

You're in Montana, so I'm not sure what opportunities are available. If you want to sell something, make sure you're selling to people that have money. Selling stuff to broke people is an easy way to get nowhere fast.

I know what my plan is, but it's very different from yours.

If you think this is for real then get ready to go back to school and retool. Or, upgrade your skills in a major way and prepare to go forward again with what you already know. You might be better off cranking your skillset up to the next level and competing there rather than dropping out and competing against cabinetmakers with 12 years of experience. Cabinetmaking is a serious trade!

What is a computer job? Are you referring to sombody who enters medical records into a computer, or are you referring to a deep submicron RF micro-chip design engineer?

Even the best can lose their jobs during mergers, outsourcing etc. Your lack of empathy is pretty shitty in the circumstances. Here's hoping it never happens to you.

I have to agree with 2cher. I'm finishing my degree in Computer Science and I have an offer for a job in Germany, which I'm not going to take due to the doom factor. Lot's of companies are still hiring highly skilled people, there's still a shortage. I do feel sorry for you, so much administration work is routine outsourceable stuff.

Also people demanding jobs makes me want to puke a little, especially when it's Americans. I'm not talking about you by the way hermit. Then again the American government hates the people and will stop at nothing to outlaw their economic freedoms. Demanding jobs from the government... They should be demanding freedom at gunpoint if need be.

Unfortunately, I used to be like 2cher - The economy was so hot, it was hard to imagine not being able to find work. Anyone who was unemployed, probably had something wrong with them.

Unfortunately, this is not the case now. Lots of good people hitting the streets simultanously, resulting in lots of competition. 10% of those that remain will re-invent themselves as management, and the top 10% will settle into the remaining jobs (inevitably taking a pay cut).

As it happens, I'm a hard worker, but not a handshaker, or a superstar.

I will try to get another IT job, but it's a shrinking field in NA, any way you cut it.

Do ranchers and other commercial enterprises spread out over your
huge state need help on site to configure, network, and maintain
their internet connections which I imagine are often satellite rigs?
Does the satellite internet provider out there need someone?

As you probably already know, there is nothing like being there to
set up computing and networking, and especially when the end user
is all about something like managing huge acreage and workers and
not about sitting around acting like remote hands for a guy in India.

See if you can mail your shingle out to ranch or farm supply stores
in a 150 mile radius with little tear off contact info strips on there so
it is easy to tear one off and jam it into a pocket.

Many of us are getting our ass kicked due to foreign competition and
the squeeze on the American middle class from the corporate pirates
and their Coolie labor deals. Get out to where their foot can't reach your
buns as easily and don't let the ass kick become a fatal dose of
Eeyore disease.

The unemployment rate in MT is ridiculously low because the population is ridiculously low. MT is just slightly smaller in area than CA but has a total population equal to city of San Jose.
I don't know anything about IT jobs in MT. Good luck.
