Rodeo and animal cruelty?

Unread postby vampyregirl » Fri 01 Jan 2010, 15:57:12

I have been to the Calgary Stampede and let me tell you I don't know why the animal rights activists protest it as animal cruelty when its the HUMANS who get hurt. Ive seen riders go down hard, saw one carried out of the arena on a stretcher and I was holding my breath hoping he was ok.
I have talked to a rider who has broken everything from his jaw to his ankle and had a bad concussion to boot. Those cowboys are genuine tough guys, not many people have the guts to do what they do.
Anyway people who want to see the rodeo banned are fuckin dreaming. It would be like trying to get rid of ice hockey. Its a Canadian tradition, especialy in the western provinces.
Another thing, no stock contractor with any business sense would mistreat his animals. He needs them well fed and healthy in order for them to perform and make him money.

It's cruelty because it forces them to engage in activities they would never engage in otherwise. I don't think it's pleasurable for the animals. It screws with their heads.

And it's all for two-leggers' entertainment.

The Stampede is an awesome show. I especially enjoy the small local rodeo's with all the kids having fun. The clowns are fantastic.

It's always a guess with animals. I kept asking my dog if she was having a good time on our backpacking trip. I think she enjoyed it, but maybe she would have been happier on the couch at home ?

Cats often play with other animals in cruel ways but I guess you could make the case that toying with a mouse is to hone its survival skills. Humans need to be entertained to survive I guess and I think the origins of the rodeo were somewhat to hone or at least showcase certain cowboy skills. I think people can draw the line at different points. I could do without rodeos, bullfighting, etc.

These performing animals probably don't have such a bad life

and dancing monkeys are awfully entertaining!

Dance, monkey. Dance!

Some people are against wearing furs:

SUN or even leather or eating meat.

That leaves petroleum based synthetics and plant-based such as cotton (which is fuel & fertilizer intensive).

And silk, is that cruel to silkworms?

I didn't realize Spock and the Captain could be so goofy! Reminds me of playing horsey with the kids when they were little.

Nah, I just don't like to watch the rodeo. I'm more likely to cheer for the bull.

What's that strap around the animal's groin for. Everyone
in a rodeo has one. It doesn't look like it's for he animals'
comfort.
