That reminds me a bit career in Soviet security services before KGB was formed (initially it was Czerezwyczajka, then NKWD).
It was generally known, that once you are getting to top positions in said organizations, Mr Stalin or (later) Khrushchev may perceive you as a threat and power competitor.
That was usually resulting in chiefs of said services to eventually face execution squads, perhaps as a summit of career.
That didn't stop a queue of candidates to attempt to get these posts.

More of a problem than cooperation is the propensity to believe impossible things. How many people have we all heard proudly say "I bought my own house" when what they mean is the bank bought them a house to live in and pay through the nose for the next 15 to 25 years (or more).
Our selfish tendencies have been exploited to a T and the art of exploiting them has grown exponentially, saturating the fabric of society. We almost invariably think of ourselves 1st; we think this is normal. Cooperation means thinking cooperatively. This is the dismantling of the complex web of deceit and lies we have had over us for generations. Only when the S really HTF will we realise our true nature and dependence on cooperative systems.
While the status quo remains in place we can all go on in the delusion that 'every man is an island' extending our compassion as far as our nuclear family only, with perhaps a tokenist feel good charity giving now and then for those with some grain of a conscience left.

How many well meaning types have I met who swore blue in the face that they hated money only to suck up to the machine as soon as they got to the head of the queue. Run a pigsty and you breed pigs.
