The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

The current movie incarnation of this quirky tale from 1978 is a pleasant surprise. The basic content is unchanged, but the actors playing Arthur Dent and Tricia McMillan bring a likeability, sweetness, and warmth to a story that began as adolescent sophistry and wisecracking. It is exactly the right movie for the time of peak oil.

DON'T PANIC is excellent advice. :)

I finally understood why 42 is the meaning of life. It's the number of gallons in a barrel of oil.

Mr Adams himself, said in an interview with BBC, that he was looking for the 'funniest' number. He apparently did a survey amonst his friends and rellies and eventually picked 42 because it 'felt' right.

Are there really 42 gallons in a barrel of oil? Just co-incidence I'm sure. You know sometimes you can get too obsessed with this peak oil stuff. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
Kind regards, Katkinkate

At that point it becomes a tool of pleasure.

There are actually several different barrel measures but the liquid barrel used for oil is 42 Gallons.

and there is a lot in hitchhiker's that resembles PO. Particularly the whole theme that reality isn't as stable as people are given to believe

for those that don't recognize it, my signature is from the series (title of the 4th book)

I don't remember Marvin getting shot in the book, though. Or was I not paying attention while reading?

What's your favourite quote(s)?

Here's some of mine:
"On the planet earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much— the wheel, New York, wars and so on— while all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man— for precisely the same reasons."

"There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable... There is another theory which states that this has already happened."

And my (current) sig:
"In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."

Looking forward to the movie! ;)

The first of your quotes is a big favourite of mine and my brother. He used to have it written in huge letters in front of his desk.
