I hate to dash your enthusiasm, but peak oil apparently happened in 2005, and I'm sitting here in the middle of western civilization typing this. And its still here.

With the current accumulation of knowledge, the world weaned from oil, would not need to slide all the way back to the stone-age, could stop in the 16th. Century quite comfortably for some, but the military conflicts that will occur will likely take the world back to pre-historic times.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', '

You know, the tiring thing about participating in a forum is that to engage in an intelligent debate involves offering up the same data again and again. It gets tiring and repetitive. Ultimately you have to decide whether you want to keep repeating yourself or just opt out altogether. I really wish people put more effort into doing their own research rather than just coming on a forum, announcing their ignorance, and then sitting back smugly waiting to see whether doomers can change them. Show me a doomer and I'll show you someone with a tall stack of books by their side. So we obviously have a wealth of information at our disposal, whereas the average guy off the street has nothing but hazy BAU style notions about energy and ecology. You know, only seeing things 1" in front of their faces. Food comes from the grocery store, and gas comes from the gas station.

But I really don't think the way to deal with all that is to resort to simple put downs. When it gets to that point you know it's time to just walk away and let others with more patience to take over.

Why do so many people assume peak oil means "instant doom" when it is the decline in production and the accompanying price rise that will cause real harm?

Being afraid of the peak of oil is like being afraid of peak income. I'm not worried about the peak, I'm worried about what comes after it and what shape the downslope takes.

Right now we seem to be on the bumpy plateau. My interpretation is it is like a spaceship traveling near a black hole that it doesn't see. At some point you see a velocity drop, and then you realize you are getting pulled by something, so then you increase power output to compensate which slows you down from being pulled in fast. Then you keep increasing power until you max out your effort and then your engines explode and then its free fall past the event horizon into the black hole.

2005 was probably like when people felt a velocity drop and then increased power. I'm more interested in what year we go into free fall.
An ideology is by definition not a search for TRUTH-but a search for PROOF that its point of view is right

Equals barter and negotiate-people with power just take

You cant defend freedom by eliminating it-unknown

Our elected reps should wear sponsor patches on their suits so we know who they represent-like Nascar-Roy

What a load of cock and bull.
What a load of mean spirited, short-sighted techtopian bull turds. What makes you think your gadgets and gimmicks are going to replenish the planet.

Oh come on, Einstein. The guy's handle is "Bullcock". It's just humor ("What a load of cock and bull"). Jeezus.

I'm a peak oil moderate, just for the record. I read plenty of books on both sides of the peak oil debate and hundreds of articles. You're the humorless, mean-spirited one.

Because contemporaneous to the event, that is EXACTLY what more than a few were claiming. Heck, even Colin Campbell was talking about permanent

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('rangerone314', '

Even that assumes that peak oil has somehow caused a free fall. We are now 4 years post peak, rolling up on 5.

Can you ask the same question about the corollary? Who was getting the predictions RIGHT about consequences some 4-5 years post peak? Who might have been claiming that peak would cause no shortages? No lack of food on store shelves? Full inventories, plenty of natural gas and coal to go around? Electricity for whoever wants it? Call me crazy, but anyone saying that sort of stuff around here would have been derided pretty heavily, and irony of ironies, still is.

About me:

I was born in Warsaw and came to NYC with my parents at an early age. I am now 21 years old and studying history. I enjoy creating & viewing art, competitive video games (quake live), and my netflix account.

I don't remember when I first heard of peak oil but it didn't really pique my interest until very recently. I came here after trying to spark discussion on the topic on another forum i've frequented for several years but nobody there seems to have anything to say on the subject. Now i'm just trying to figure out how this will unfold (specifically in NA and Europe), and what the best course of action is.

Where I stand:

Much of the people here remind me of truthers, birthers, and Ron Paul supporters. Which is unfortunate, because I never thought i'd belong to such a group; however, after absorbing everything I could find in the past few weeks I do believe that we have already entered peak oil and that the effects have been weakened by the recession. Nothing new for many of you but it came as quite a shock to me.
