Thanks. That was a great video. Only three miunutes, but with valuable ideas. I especially liked his thought that the opposite of consumption is generosity.

It takes real skill to frame this stuff in a way that resonates. You know, something a little more nuanced than the typical partisan/anti-establishment ranting.

I like the line:

"We mortgaged our future and called it freedom"

The opposite of consumption is generosity? Really? So if Bill Gates and Warren Buffet will feed all those poor, poor people who live on $1 a day for 100 days or whatever their fortunes will last, world will be a better place? Those fine forests in this video will have a chance then, right?

I'm also pretty sure a forestry company would use that price gun to put a value of more than $0 on that forest and if that refinery is the one Valero wants to shut down in DE I don't think it's worth $600+ million.

FYI - 90min lecture by Patel on The Value of Nothing available here on the LSE website. -worth a listen.

Date: Tuesday 1 December2009
Time: 6.30-8pm
Venue: Hong Kong Theatre, Clement House
Speaker: Raj Patel

"Nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing." Credit has crunched, debt has turned toxic, the gears of the world economy have ground to a halt. It's now clear that the market doesn't only get it wrong about sub-prime mortgages; it gets it wrong about everything. We need to ask again one of the most fundamental questions a society ever addresses: why do things cost what they do?
