Not a terrible idea. But I think there should be an even greater obligation on any person wishing to be a politician (and thus, President). They should have to give 3 years each to Community Service, Military Service, Environmental Service and Agricultural Service. And no, working for a Walmart does not count as Community Service, nor does working for Monsanto count as Agricultural Service. They have to be projects that work for the planet, not against it.
We've tried nothin' and we're all out of ideas.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Hawkcreek', ' ')If you aren't willing to serve your country in some capacity

What about the group of people who want a nation to use its military, yet don't want to pay taxes to fund that military? A military that lacks body armor, truck armor, and needs its citizens to send the troops coffee or 'adopt a sniper'?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Hawkcreek', 'I') know, I know, the politicians are pieces of shit, but isn't the country still worth a little sacrifice if needed?

Of course it is. But what kind of sacrifice is the real question. As far as I'm concerned, blindly going along with what your nation's leaders say and going along with a draft isn't patriotic or democratic- it's stupid and totalitarian. If I felt that military service was a good way of serving and protecting my country, I would probably volunteer, and I certainly wouldn't have any problem being drafted. Right now military service has nothing to do with protecting the United States. It has everything to do with imperialism. If I got drafted, you're damn right I would try to dodge it! And if they caught me, they could throw my ass in prison. I'm not going to other countries to kill poor people and rob their nation's natural resources under the false pretense of protecting America.

In general though, I agree with your point. If our military were more representative of our nation (like more middle class and rich people instead of mainly the poor), I bet we'd think a lot longer and a lot harder before sending our armed services overseas to risk their lives. Bullshit wars like Vietnam and Iraq (yes, I include the first Iraqi war here too. Go read Behind the War on Terror by Nafeez Ahmed) never would have happened to begin with.

The simplest solution is, do it as was originally intended.
Only landowners can vote. If you dont own land, you dont vote.

Wrong thread - I expected this thread to be about Heinlein's Revolt in 2100. In that story the USA became a backward religious dictatorship.
