The Way We Were

I was in an orthopedists office this morning and stumbled on the National Geographic article about peak oil from June 04. It's a pretty good article if you haven't seen it. One sentence though really grabbed me.

"The world can still produce so much crude that the current price of about $30 for a 42-gallon barrel would plummet if the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) did not limit production."

That was a mere 10 months ago. Me thinks we are in for a wild ride

Funnily enough, I just re-read that article yesterday. I remember seeing so many things that were projected to happen 10+ years from now, and they were already happening this year. They even mentioned the Texas Railroad Commissions statement that spelled the Peak for America, and failed completely to apply the same possibility to OPEC. And yet here we are. Still a great article though.. I'm planning to show it to a few people to introduce them to PO. National Geographic is such a well respected magazine, people have no choice but to take notice at least.

That's the article that I read that introduced me to the whole peak oil situation.

They had a forum on the NG website discussing the story. One of the posters there had a link to Matt Savinar's site.

Boy, did that ruin my day :)

I notice that the pace of events surrounding peak oil seem to be happening sooner than many expected.

Peak oil is happening a few years later than we expected at Caltech in the 1970s.

What has been blowing my mind for a quarter century is that the finite geological limitations on oil production became a taboo topic after Reagan was elected in 1980. The solar panels were stripped off the White House and have never returned. And the news blackout on public discussion of the subject was continued right up to the peak.

I remember being SO delighted that Nat'l Geo would do a story about PO. Their series on global warming at the turn of the century brought much attention to that issue. Now PO gets its turn! In both cases, as has been mentioned for the PO story, events have been happening at a much faster pace than even the experts expected. Still, I find that when an issue manages to get to Nat'l Geo, it's managed to get to the mainstream. Unfortunately, it's looking like too little, too late--but I'd rather see the world as we know it go down with humans KNOWING about it, than not knowing about it! Besides, when you KNOW, there's a shot that someone and/or something will come through the crisis ahead. That's good news, whatever the "issue"!
