I first would rebuild my stockpile of goods that I hoarded in July of 2008 when I thought the end was near. Being out of work since January of 2009, I have used up my stocks of just about everything other than oatmeal, and I hear oatmeal goes bad after a period of time??

Second I would let all my relatives know that they can't quit their jobs and retire, I'll be around to help with money issues, but I'm not giving the million away in portions to family so that they can all retire early.

The mention of buying farm land is tempting, although I can't even get the 8 x 14 square foot garden in my back yard to grow anything other than weeds in the best of times. I really suck at farming. Some natural lettus grows, and I hear dandelion leaves are edible, at least we will have salad.

I few nice trips to Disney world, a budget Vegas trip and other exotic theme parks while they still exist would also be interesting, as all these things will fade to cultural memory once peak oil hits. I had a dream last night that I was on the 'price is right' and I won both showcases. Wouldn't mind visiting the Bob Barker studio in Santa Barbara just for fun.

- pay-off debts
- finish construction/supplying of homestead
- loooong vacation in Europe (while travel is possible/cheap)
- use the rest to minimize my need to work a BAU job..

For those of you who want farm land - here is a thought.

There are natural gas deposits in North Central PA. The gas companies are just know buying up the leases at about $1,500/ acre.

I'm wondering if, after this "cash crop" has been harvested if there won't be a glut of land on the market?

May be worth watching if dairy is your thing.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('JoeW', 'T')his is a no brainer for me. I would pay off the house and go back to school to be a doctor. If you want to talk about a skill that will always be valuable...try helping the sick and wounded.

In all the world, I challenge anyone to show me where there is a homeless, starving doctor. (That's rhetorical, of course. No need to point out that a random homeless doctor or two exist out there).

Yes I thought this too. Not necessarily a doctor (we are not all cutout for that) but invest some money in getting skills or infrastructure to provide goods or services that will be needed down the track.

My dream plans come to about 750 000 Euros....that would be
1) to buy a smallish old farm with enough forests
2) stock the farm with fruit trees and berry bushes, and enough raised beds for food for all
3) build a series of small houses that would serve well in a no fossil-fuel no electricity world, which would be well build to last 200 or so years. This would mean heating and cooking on wood, although as a transition there would be electricity generated (pv and wind). The cluster of houses would include one family unit, a barn, one small two-roomed cottage (for the old folk) and a sauna (we are in Finland and that is one of the basic needs of people)

What to do with the rest. Part would be spent on helping family members to prepare, and part would be spent in the local community to help with its transition --- basically carring on as I have but with a lot more money available to do so.

Actually, I would spend over $1 million as I would sell my present property

Not much to read yet. :(

Also, I'd be willing to bet you spent longer typing than you did reading.

A million dollars isn't what it once was but...
Assuming a million after taxes or tax free:
Pay off all remaining debt (leaving a hefty chunk remaining).
Search for and purchase a small farm type piece of property, 15+ acres with its own water source (can have a well but also needs a non-seasonal stream or spring, etc...)i.e.- a better homestead than my current location
Move to said piece of land once it is purchased and renovated to be capable of off grid living (which renovations will eat up another hefty chunk of the remaining cash).

At that point it would be a toss up whether I used the rest purchasing gold (for investment), silver (for usage after TSHTF), more supplies, etc... or tuck it away somewhere to pay property taxes on the land for quite a while, removing part of the need to earn.

Anyhow, in all likelihood, there would be a good sized chunk remaining for that last section plus the proceeds from the sale of the current house (assuming it sold). That would do improvements around the home, prep work, pay taxes, etc...

Guilty as charged

There was a thread late last year something like "What would you do with $50K?" it was triggered by someone getting an inheritance or something, actually turned into a reasonably interesting read. I'll have another look in a day or two see where this one ends up.

pay off my mortgage and Mrs Roy's student loan. refurb my house (windows, insulation, metal roof, solar). Buy a Z06 Corvette, and a Volt. Quit my suckass job and start my own IT consulting business.

Take a 3 month trip all over the US with my wife and kids in a big ass RV.

With no debt *(mortgage/rent), I could afford to have my own business and not report daily to a job that is sucking the life out of me.

I'm sitting here typing right now, procrastinating getting ready for work. Call in sick? Did that last Monday.

Buy a small farm that's less than 100 acres and live the rest of my days farming and raising my family off the grid. I truly believe this is the best solution for me in a Peak Oil world. I'd learn to raise cows, chickens, pigs, and horses so that I wouldn't need a car, tractor or motorcycle. Damn...I'm starting to sound like I want to be Amish...

First of all, a million dollars is yesterdays one hundred thousand dollars. You need ten million today to feel like the millionaire of just a short time ago. Even with the crap beat out of home prices, a million won't get you much of a home in the better districts of LA.
The things that will destroy America are prosperity-at-any-price, peace-at-any-price, safety-first instead of duty-first, the love of soft living, and the get-rich-quick theory of life.
