Good research idea. It piqued my interest as I thought the returns were low for all categories and did a search on news archives. This resulted in AIDS – 2.51m, Recession – 1.66m and Peak Oil – 0.28m hits. These numbers are considerably larger than the ones you quoted, with PO still lagging. On the other hand, it’s not that great a total for an earth changing event. Most media do not operate in future mode. Stories that sell are those that are immediate, not some concept that might or might not happen.

I also searched Global Warming and found 0.55m hits. Respectable given the higher political interest, but not outstanding either.

PO is barely on the radar relatively, as stories on this topic only started to develop after around 2001. Interestingly, they peaked in 2006. (Peak Peak Oil Stories) Fossil Fuels at 0.15m are even less on the radar despite Al Gore.

The recession archives are spread over a much larger time frame and encompass references to all previous recessions, not just the present.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('drgoodword', '
')I don't think I seen someone at his level of access state that the Peak Oil issue is being deliberately ignored by government. Not surprising, but very disturbing.

Government(the central bankers) have not been ignoring peak oil, I would argue their primary policies(war, genocide, ecocide, economic collapse) are tailored around it for obvious reasons. What they're not ignoring, but intentionally avoiding is creating public awareness on the issue for the same obvious reasons.

It's disturbing to me, that seasoned peak oilers are still in shock over what should be common sense by now. Or I'm just jealous I can't have my own head stuck in the sand. :-D

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('drgoodword', 'G')iven that Peak Oil could be an even bigger problem than the current Great Recession or Aids, media coverage for Peak Oil is very, very thin.

Media coverage for Peak Oil is cyclical, almost seasonal. The articles start flying in when the price of oil shoots up. Reporters probably start asking experts about what's up and then the experts on Peak Oil have their say.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'v')isibility apparently got so high that NETL was told to stop any further work on peak oil

I remember listening to a Dmitri Orlov lecture (on video) where Orlov talked about a man in the USSR who made disaster politics his forte and how poorly he fared.

Then there's the Jimmy Carter story--a study in how unpopular it is to be a political figure working on an energy crisis.
