What can I say? As someone who has gone through every possible stage of PO awareness, I am no longer worried about Peak Oil.

PO may cause massive economic jitters around the globe, it may cause countries to contribute less food to some 3rd world nations, and it will probably exacerbate global warming, but it will not be TEOTWASKI.

Between LNG imports, coal, liquefied coal, nuclear generation, new refineries to process heavy oil, off shore drilling, and possible dredging for methane ice, we have plenty of energy to burn for the foreseeable (next couple of hundred years) future.

Yes, we will probably face some hard economic times (more due to economic bubbles, the fed and imports than any thing else.) in the near term. Longer term, I think we will strong arm the Chinese into floating their currency which will cause the trade balance to even out a bit. (Heck, we might even start to export food and/or coal to them.)

Anyway, no end of world, no die off (at least in 1st world, 3rd world dieing every day(AIDS, hunger, etc.)), and no Mad Max.

For those of you contemplating what to do about your college degrees, STAY IN SCHOOL. We will still have most of the same jobs for a long time coming, what ever you do, don't go into debt(bad idea PO or not), and try not to stress about things too much.

We really are a clever species, and what ever train happens to be coming our way (Food shortages(pre green revolution), Cold War, Y2K, PO, etc.) we might wait for some pain to start, but we have really honed our ability to get out of the train's way.

I expect the effect of peak oil where I live will be some combination of a 30's style economic depression and 40's style wartime rationing.

My strategy to live with this is to learn to live simply and not need much. I can live this way quite contentedly. I was poor as a kid and amused myself mostly by walking around, riding around on the bike I put together from scavenged parts, and looking around in my community. I went to the library a lot. Didn't cost nuthin.

I have started a "victory garden". I have learned to prepare meals from simple commodities like raw vegetables and grains. I grind my own wheat and bake my own bread.

If you have a paid off place to live and no other debt, know how to do without a car, and learn not to miss all the silly consumer crap you'll probably be fine.

I expect pretty much the same, but starting with 70s-like problems. Possibly including a revival of punk.

Yep... everything will be fine...

It'll be a Norman Rockwell kinda life post peak, and the nations of the world will cooperate in the spirit of peace and universal well-being.

Little Jimmy from next door will sneak strawberries from your orchard, and you'll pretend to look the other way, a knowing grin on your face.

Yes sir, post peak is about skippin stones across the old pond, and whittling a stick on the porch with Uncle Joe.

or perhaps...

It'll be a Norman Bates kinda life post peak. The nation's of the world will compete for a shrinking resource base.

Little Jimmy will get shot stealing scarce food from your already skeletal family.

Uncle Joe's head will be on a sharpened stick at the town's border.

Of course, you won't know about any of that stuff... because you'll be dying of dysentery in a foxhole in some foreign land.

But naw...

As poverty becomes wide-spread, I'm sure it will foster a new world-wide movement of cooperation and the preservation of human dignity.

The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Man if this does come true and we all end up abroad fighting over oil, it would be kind of ironic if Aaron ended up in the same trench as John Denver and JH Morrison.

Be kinda interesting to see who Aaron shoots at first , the enemy or the guys in his trench :P

You're being rather gloomy today, Aaron. :(

One or the other.

We get to choose. So far... It doesn't look so good. I hope we can change.

Well I'm too old to draft, and perhaps I'm in a gloomy mood today...

or

When I apply Occam's Razor to our predicament, I get:

What's more likely?

That nations will come together and resolve their disputes peacefully as oil becomes less available.

or

That nations will continue as they have for countless centuries, and fight over resources.

Hmmm... let's see... well... ummm... err.....

- freakin wonderful
