Not exactly like that, but I do believe it's in book. It's in the chapter titled, "The Shadow of the Past," near the beginning, when Frodo first hears about what's up with the Ring and all that. In fact, this post is making me want to read the books again. ^_^

the book and the movie were very different in the level of detail, and the level of depth and gravity the story gave over the movie.
the books were a lot more realistic, rather than expressing amazing themes, they described ordinary ones that added up to something better.
the movies made it seem as if there were some magic reason why they made it. in the books it was simply because they tried.

With The Hobbit coming to a theater near me in two weeks I find myself contemplating the difference between the idyllic vision of a pre fossil fuel society and reality of that society I know from the study of history.
I would love it if the animal power civilization we had could support all the people living on this planet and supply housing for them. But for that to happen we would have to go back to 50% or more of humans working in Agriculture because without fossil fuels you have to grow food local to the population, and it takes a LOT of effort. How would the average American or European react knowing that they were no longer going to be doing what they chose as a career but instead were being taught how to be small farmers with small surpluses to sell for a small income?

We would need to make a conscience decision to shed what we now hold most dear, that is the accumulation of stuff. There of course is no correlation between material wealth and the state of your psychological or physical well being, other then to secure your basic needs without threat. Beyond that it's all unnecessary excess.
We'd also need a planetary population consisting of around a billion people rather then one seven times as large.
If we do this, maybe we all could live like hobbits? Since it's unlikely that we will, it looks like Tolkien's metaphor of Mordor is more apt to be our fate.

The thing is when I travel around SE Michigan and NW Ohio I see hundreds of abandoned small farm lots, most of them in the 20 acre size range. They have been left fallow for anywhere from 100 years on down and range from new growth woodland all the way to weed choked fields and every stage in between. In the back of my head I catch myself thinking just how much subsistence level farming they could support and what a shame it is that letting them revert to woodland now is going to make survival that much harder for those who remain if society hard crashes.
