In spite of their false bravado, I often find it rather sad just how deferentially the Chinese depend on/emulate us Western "experts". It's almost as if they are in a rush to forget who they are and where they come from. Strange.

Travel to India on the other hand, and they are quite relaxed about the culture thing. I find this dichotomy bizarre as both are overlapping and neighbouring ancient civilisations. Which is why I suspect that were Western money to leave (for the moment anyway), China would keel over from lack of direction. In time they will Japanise but by then oil (or the lack of it) will be a dampener.

I've been advising a few of my clients of this risk and encouraging them to adopt a more indigenous focus. I invariably get these disconcerting blank looks. :|

China as we know it only began after Mao's long march. Yes it is an ancient civilization; but no, it is more a conglomerate of ancient civilizations. There are hundreds of indigenous languages still spoken within China. China is younger than the USA in real terms.

India has a cultural continuum which China is lacking. The main cultural trait of Chinese is thinking they are better than everyone. In Hinduism this is a grave offense. Humans don't generally need much steering towards materialism.
