R.I.P. Prince of Darkness

Unread postby dinopello » Wed 19 Aug 2009, 10:16:47

Fellow doomer, Robert Novak died yesterday at 78 from a brain tumor. He was a hard nosed, no holds barred kind of conservative media person with more integrity than the new breed like Hannity IMO so I thought I would recognize that.

Most recently, he was cited for running over an 87 year old homeless guy with his car who turned out seemed somewhat pleased to be struck by such a well known Washingtonian.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he homeless pedestrian who was struck by a car driven by syndicated columnist Robert D. Novak said in a radio interview yesterday that he is "doing fine," recovering from a dislocated shoulder, and voiced surprise and amusement that the prominent political pundit was at the wheel of the Chevrolet Corvette that hit him.

"Bob Novak is the one that hit me?" said 86-year-old Don Clifford Liljenquist, sounding astonished when WMAL (630 AM) reporter Troy Russell told him that the driver was Novak. "Well, everybody knows who Bob Novak is! He's a famous journalist! . . . I was struck by Bob Novak? . . . Well, I think that makes it a great story!"...

Anyway, they called him Prince of Darkness because he had little hope for civilization at an early age so I thought he would fit right in here.

Yeah. He as a cynical bastard who believed nothing. He was in it for the buck. Good riddance.

Well, that's not a nice thing to say. He made no secret of his belief that self-enrichment was legit. So that's believing in something. Personally, I think he had more dimensions than the current crop of conservative commentators.

I used to love watching his grouchy butt on Crossfire back in the day.

Crossfire was great fun when it was ex-spook Tom Braden vs. Buchannan or Novak. I switched the thing off when they replaced Braden with that spineless little twit Michael Kinsley, who was a precursor to Alan Colmes; as Al Franken set out the type in one of his books:

Hannity and Colmes

Probably you can cue up some video of Braden on YerTube.

And let me tell you something: I dig your work.

I liked Bob also. He was a principled Conservative and that is rare these days. He made Crossfire required viewing in our household especially when paired with Braden. They would actually debate the issue of the day back then instead of focusing on polls and fluff.

Btw, four days after hitting the homeless man and driving off without stopping his brain tumor was discovered. I knew something had to be up because as much as he loved to play up the "Prince of Darkness" image he actually did have a heart. Turns out "hospital residents check for brain tumors in patients who didn't realize they struck something in a car accident, as this can be a focal neurologic sign."

RIP Bob.

Man, a LOT of famous people have died lately. Today it was Don Hewitt of 60 Minutes fame. More of a behind-the-scenes guy to most people but still a heavy hitter in journalism.

This is somewhat off topic, but I went to Washington DC to the exact spot where this accident occurred (while on vacation). I noticed a lot of traffic and a small number of homeless people that tended to drift on and off the sidewalk and unto the street - as if they were walking on clouds.

I am not excusing Novak but this kind of accident probably happens more frequently than thought. In another office I worked at a few years ago, a homeless person walked in front of a car and was killed.

Back on topic, Novak was easier to take than the current crop of conservatives. That's all I want to say about that.
It's already over, now it's just a matter of adjusting.
