yes its my first post, i am a 19 year old student, I have been reading this forum for about 4 months now, and the whole thing depresses me so much,i am enrolled in acounting major, and after reading the whole thing i dont think there is future for this career, in high school i allways thought about a career that will have something to do with numbers, a business career, but now a regret not taking sciense courses, which is to late now because i am in university and i have little background about envirnmental sciense, so i cant realy change my majors. Also my parents dont beleive in peak oil and still encourage me to finish school, i wont to finish school but not in the field i am curentlly involved in. I am so freaking confused
I know ppl asked that question before( ididnt find an answear to satisfy me) but what majors u guys recomend involving numbers and no sciense back gound in peak oil period?

I dont want to make another post but i was just wondering what exactly draw economy(stock market) to crush in 1930's, and do you guys think of the media was more developed as it is now, will the crush happen? Right now peak oil is in main stream, ppl talk about, we get updates from stock markets, wouldnt you think if market will crush experts will know about it?
Also i dont exactly follow the concept of economic meltdown, how society economy can meltdown without a crush a certain date from where everything goes wrong, i dont think the prices of milk when it hit 12$ will get there nice and smoothly like oil, there must a major breaking point.

Hello.

I am a nineteen-year-old college student as well. I am a declared English major but looking to transfer schools and switch majors to Geography and Enviromental Planning. This is all pending on scholarships and financial aid info.

You are good with numbers. Why not become a math major? Math is useful everywhere. It will also give you some versatility. Versatility is important. Stay away from narrow areas of study, like accounting.

If it's possible, develop a backup plan. I am enrolling in the EMT basic training course at the local junior college. If things don't work out with the financial aid, I plan working towards paramedic certification. If earn my degree in Geo. and EP, I have a more diverse array of skills and abilities.

A fellow 19 year old student checking in as well. Don't know what major I'm going to settle in. I'm taking a bunch of science course and I did AP calculus - so I'm good for first year science of just about anything. Funny thing is, is that my family is like, "you should go into accounting, you like money, plus, its dependable." Bah, to that, they won't accept peak oil until it hits them in the face.

I don't know if any majors are dependable and I don't think many people can tell you anything else that's accurate. The future looks to be bumpy.

Do what you love. I heard that's the best advice ever. That way if you end up needing to needing work for hours on end - you won't miss the time. Or you could scam people out of their money and then run off before the SHTF.

I have no clue about majors, you have no clue, and the next person who posts won't know any better either. In my opinion, it's a gamble at this point.

basic accounting, no matter what anyone tells you, is and will remain a useful skill.

but whether you want to do a major in it, well that's a different question.

do you enjoy it?

just because you did accounting at university doesn't mean you have to become an accountant. post peak, small businesses catering to local needs, possibly involving the use of LETS = Local Exchange Trading Systems = local currencies and barter, will proliferate. small businesses and communities will need accounting skills. so it is not a waste of time if you enjoy it.

accounting also gives you a good insight into how businesses work, so is a pathway to lots of other careers.

btw, i am not an accountant but i did basic accounting classes in university (hated it) but my current job involves looking at and working with financial statements, etc.

so it was helpful!

cheers! :)

Hi.

This is my first post as well.

I'm a 23 year old museum guard from sweden who majored in astronomy and spend my free time bodybuilding...what do you think my career chances are for the future? ;)

I belive the most importent thing is to try to think positive and prepare yourself mentally.
And then take small steps towards being more independent.

I have a house in the countryside wich i plan to move to if tshtf.
It has a wooden stove, freshwater well and a big enough vegetable garden.
it's also close to the ocean, about 1 mile, and there are very good fishing spots there.
The house has been in my family for generations so all is paid for.
I also plan on installing some solar panels on the roof.

I think you will do well in the future, simply because you are one of few that already know what is to come and have time to prepare yourself.
so dont worry to much now :)

so far my parents have been paying for my school, but do u guys think its worse it going into debt to finish school, i will probably end up paying 15000 $ in debt. If so what will happen to the people that declare a bancryptcy when the economy crushes? Does that mean they cant work, or all thier money goes towards that loan when they do work?

Bankruptcy? Dude, haven't you been watching the news?

That's a thing of the past for most of us.

See if your school offers a major in applied math. That'll still allow you to get a job working with numbers, and it's not as narrow as accounting.

Also, certain kinds of debt cannot be discharged thru a bankruptcy. I could be wrong but I believe student loans are one of them.
