Road Repair Prices Promote De-paving

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'â')€¢ A few paved roads in Hall County, Neb., will revert to gravel surfaces, says public works director Casey Sherlock. "At some point, they'll be potholed so bad we won't be able to keep patching them." He had hoped to resurface 6-7 miles of road this spring and could afford only 2 miles.

I think the re-graveling of rural roads that see little traffic is a positive thing. Asphalt roads take several times the manpower and material to maintain.

Gravel roads can support lower speed and capacity traffic that many rural areas create.

Some of these roads, even in southcoast ma., were paved within the last decade and supported the same populations before as now with little outward comment on the difference by the populace.

Well grated and drained gravel roads were the standard in the 20's and 30's and do not become mudpits if they are maintained properly.

True, but we no longer have the trained teams of oxen to pull the graders.

Can't speak for the nation ox but our county could hire the Amish. I have a quite a few non-Amish neighbors with draft horses as well.

Good day from Pheba:
Our gravel road was always covered with higher grade white rock. Now it is being covered with low grade yellow/creek rock and lower grade white/yeloow rock. The lower grade rock grinds to dust quickly.
I have my doubts we will ever see the white rock again. The county can not afford it.

8) It used to be that the break even point on when to pave a road was five hundred vehicles per day. More then five hundred and you have to keep grading out the pot holes and ruts formed by the action of the tires with a motor grader costing some $95 per hour with the operator and a paved road only needs to be resurfaced on a five to twenty year schedule depending on the quality of the base and the thickness of the original pavement.
Today paving prices have shot through the roof and that 500 number will change in step with the price of crude. Roads with tens of thousands of cars and trucks each day will still be cheaper to maintain paved but low volume roads with a thousand to fifteen hundred per day might not.
The importance of fixing drainage and base course deficiencys prior to placing increasingly expensive pavement needs to be pressed home with people wielding the budget pen as doing it right the first time is as always the cheapest thing to do in the long run.
