$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')t’s long been assumed in transhumanist circles that eventually a computer program, a robot, a cyborg, or a genetically engineered human will achieve a far greater level of intelligence than the smartest human.

Why not Fido?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'U')sing adapted tests designed for human children, psychologists have learned that average dogs can count, reason and recognize words and gestures on par with a human 2-year-old.

“They may not be Einsteins, but are sure closer to humans than we thought,” said Stanley Coren, a professor emeritus at the University of British Columbia and leading researcher on dog behavior.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'D')ogs not only are smart in ways of reasoning and problem-solving, but they also have emotional intelligence, remarkably similar to that of humans. Dogs may even understand fairness.

In one experiment, a researcher trained two dogs to shake a paw. After both learned the trick, the researcher started giving a treat to one of the dogs every time he got it right but not to the other.

Not only did the unpaid dog stop performing, he wouldn’t even look the researcher in the eye. “He doesn’t want any part of you. He doesn’t think this is fair.”

I would love to take my Labrador Retriever out for a jog, a game of frisbee and back home for a glass of fine wine and a challenging game of chess.

Classic sci fi story about a guy who is a dog catcher, looking for enhanced pets that people treat like babies. But some biologist bootlegged a bunch that could talk, and people were cutting off the tails and shaving them, passing them off as kids......sort of like Bladerunner.

Actually my dogs are much smarter than many of the human shaped meat sacks I've interacted with or seen on TV and are much better company.

I was in the grocery store tonight and there was an Indian couple there with a pair of toddler age demons. The kids were just wandering around staring into space. Very distractable. Every sudden movement or loud noise would draw their attention. The dad was pointing to the aisle he was about to go down and trying to draw their attention. It struck me as eerily reminiscent of the way I interact with my dog. (except my dog has better manners and more business being off leash in a crowded grocery store.)

Dogs can communicate their needs pretty specifically to the well-trained pet owner. It seems that we can always find out why the dog is barking, but not why the baby is crying.

More to the point, it's a heck of a lot easier to make the dog STOP barking.

Actually maybe there's a money making idea there. A collar that spritzes your kid in the face with citronella every time it screams?
