Movie: "Dawn of the Dead"

Unread postby coyote-2012 » Sun 18 Jul 2004, 01:39:55

Just joined... When I saw the new version of Dawn of the Dead, I was gleefully horrified. It satisfied all of my tense gory apocalyptic expectations. What made me truly uneasy were my thoughts after leaving the theatre concerning the possible reality of the scenario. Now, it might just be my warpable mind, but isn't it conceivable that, once peak oil hits and the food supply is disasterously cut short, that there could be hoardes of people who've banded together in seach of ANYTHING to eat... including other people?

Just a scary thought I wanted to share.

I think that Dawn Of The Dead (the original, I haven't seen the remake) is an excellent example of a possible future. Actually, in Day Of The Dead they find out that the zombies are essentially human, or at least with human feeling and emotions, but are consumed by hunger.

When the crash begins, I think there will be a rush to buy food. During this period, those farmers capable of producing a surplus will be able to name their price, and since money won't really be an option, I'm not too sure what commerical farms (like my friend's) will ask for. Hand powered tools, possibly, bicycles, nails, weapons maybe. Perhaps things will completely get out of hand and people will sell themselves. One thing is for sure- it's going to be a scary experience finding out what power is like.

PS Then, pissed off soldiers come to the farm and shoot everyone, taking the land for themselves.

Dawn of the Dead

Unread postby Sencha » Tue 20 Jul 2004, 20:25:33

Do you remember in the opening scene of Dawn of the Dead, in which the female character walks out of her house and into the street?

The neighbors she saw running amuck, and the gunshots, ambulances, fires, etc., all that going on is probably what its going to look like when the crash hits. Minus the zombies (unless that's what we decide to call cannibalists and nuke victims.)

8O .... HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA.... you people are so damn nuts I can only laugh. YOU ARE JOKING RIGHT!? .. just making sure cause I couldnt really tell. That movie has nothing to do with reality at all in any way. Even if we were all starving to death, (not going to hapen), people wouldn't be acting like that. By the time people got so hungery as to be ready to fight for food they wouldnt have the energy left to fight. Geez thats an absolutly funny thought though. I would sit out my roof with my gun and start pickin people off if they went that nuts... better get some more ammo...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')nd anyone who doubts the integral connection between agriculture and famine need only examine the record of this period: crop failure and famine, crop failure and famine, crop failure and famine, again and again all over the civilized world. The numbers are staggering. Ten million starved to death in Bengal, 1769. Two million in Ireland and Russia in 1845 and 1846. Nearly fifteen million in China and India from 1876 to 1879.

From online excerpt of Daniel Quinn's "Boiling frog" analogy/history. So when Yamaha, our newest flaming bigmouth, starts foaming at the mouth and claiming food shortages "not going to hapen", just ignore him. Or better yet, move his flaming posts where they belong- hof.
Here's the whole story. Well worth reading if you havent seen it, link

Cheers Mad Scientist.
There'll be war, there'll be peace
But one day all things shall cease
All the iron turned to rust
All the proud men turned to dust
So all things time will mend
So this song will end

Yeah, we're color=red]Expletive deleted.[/color]. But think of it this way.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '&')quot;we know how the universe ends-" said the guide,"and earth has nothing to do with it, except that it gets wiped out too." "how-how does the universe end?" said billy.
"We blow it up experimenting with new fuels for our flying saucers. A Tralfamadorian test pilot presses a starter button and the whole universe disappears." so it goes.
"if you know this" said billy, "isn't there some way you could prevent it? Can't you keep the pilot from pressing the button?" "he has always pressed it, and he always will. We always let him and we always will let him. The moment is structured that way."

Yeah, it will be awful suffering for those alive. But linear time is only an illusion. There are no separate moments. The course of time is set in stone. What has happened cannot be changed and what will happen cannot in any way be altered. Perhaps we should live like the Tralfamdorians, focusing only on life's better moments...although that would require perspective from a fourth dimension.

Wrong. I am not sure about the remake of the movie (I have seen both) but the original Dawn of the Dead is actually a stab at consumerism by George Romero.

Actually I think that Dawn Of The Dead is probably the weakest of the trilogy, but it's still a cut above every other zombie movie. Apparently Romero is making a fourth movie, presumably the conclusion (Day Of The Dead left a lot open)?
