What is your view on the concept of Peak Oil?

My first Post

Unread postby jeromie » Wed 29 Jul 2009, 15:25:27

My name is Jerry, I post as Jeromie. I have long posted at LATOC.

I am looking for a forum where the total aspects of peak oil may be discussed starting with the technical definition of just what oil is peaking and the vast quantities of oil not included in the conventional oil peak.

What is peaking , and included in all the curves and such by professional geologists is conventional oil. That is crude oil above 20 degrees API recoverable by primary and secondary extraction methodologies. All other oils, including crude oils in the very same pools as conventional become unconventional upon entering Tertiary or Enhanced Oil Recovery . A brand new adjunct of Tertiary Recovery is the realization that considerable oil remains in a ROZ or Residual Oil Zone heretofore simply dismissed. ROZ's along with what is called " game changer" and State of the Art CO2 stimulation look to increase US oil pool recoveries from an average of around 33 % to possibly 60 %. There are other massive new technologies involving readying extra heavy oil for effective transportation and refining. There are also massive changes in unconventioal gas.

And so forth. I would like to build on all these added areas beyond peak conventional oil including, of course, renewables. Future energy to be available will be considerably more expensive with a general value of around $70 -$80 boe on a long term stable basis to justify the investment.

I would really like to see this total discussion develop and be built upon.

I bumped this from page 4.
There sure have been a lot of people who sniff around this place and then leave.
Interesting.

There was a time when this was about the only place for the regular guy to interact with people like yourself who either had real insight or the ability to find and sift what numbers there were available and then actually talk about what to do.

At the risk of talking bad about the "company", I think our free-speech policy has made us something less than palatable or even useful, to lots of passers by - I'll take all the blame anyone wants to heap on because I have defended that policy.

The point is there are lots and lots of places to go now without the constant party-line posturing and Off-Topic from anything posting.

But we still have the best news so there is hope!

I have threads that interest me bookmarked, Weekly US Petroleum and NG Supply Reports 2009 for instance. Also have email notification of updates. Looking at Latest Posts I just skim over the bulk of it. A disclaimer about all the...unusual/vocal people you encounter here might help to keep from putting new members off. Or maybe it's too late for that.

Hallo

Unread postby HumbleScribe » Thu 06 Aug 2009, 10:01:51

I'm a former research chemist-turned petrochemical industry journalist based out of the UK, came across this forum while researching an article, and wondered if it might be interesting. Some bits certainly are and there are a lot of very interesting and well-informed people here.

However, at the moment I'm not sure I'll be stopping long. There seems to be a very high proportion of conspiracy theory nutjobs, deep-green eco-doomers and those convinced that the End Times are upon us (and probably the Rapture too, for all I know), and who probably think liberal atheist Euro-weenies like myself are part of the Zionist Occupation Government.

There are some of those people you described but I hang around here because there are a few knowledgeable people who work hard at getting and dissecting the numbers and don't put much of a spin either way to their posts.

"Zionist Occupation Government"

It would be cool to run around with a T-shirt saying "I'm a member of ZOG!"

Ok, what it stands for sucks...but the initials rock :) Imagine all the "Kneel before ZOG!" spinoffs you could do since ZOD was taken....

Welcome by the way for as long as you stay. As you'll find everywhere, some people here are great, some suck. Ignore the sucky ones.

Hi there. Sounds like you have a good background to contribute some informed opinions, so hope you stick around.

Although, I'm no expert, but some of your characterizations of the more eccentric people here have me confused. AFAIK, the Rapture is part of the End Times and I always thought liberal euro-weenies were generally anti-zionists. But, maybe one of our experts in those areas will set me straight.

A fine BS filter and a good sense of humor are necessary on these forums. There are the occasional gems, if you're willing to dig through the detritus. Unfortunately, most forums seem to be like that.

pstarr, I wasn't necessarily including you among those categories, but if the tinfoil hat fits... I was actually writing here having just looked at the "CIA faked 9-11" threads and the rampaging paranoia that seems to surround Obama. You have at least given me reasoned arguments and - up until your post in this thread - only fairly moderate amounts of condescending derision, and you needn't interpret a bit of joking at the wierdness on display there as a personal attack. But like I say, do feel free to mark me as Your Mortal Enemy if you want. You'd have me confused with someone who gives much of a damn.

I admit to being slightly confused at the juxtaposition of a fear that the slightest reduction in current levels of consumption will cause the collapse of Civilisation As We Know It with a concern at the current unfettered levels of consumption and the damage it is doing. It sounds like having your cake and eating it to me.

Alas, all quite true; however, even though we have gone as far as to establish a padded room forum them, a few do occasionally slip out. :)

Oh don't worry about them; we just keep them around for the amusement factor. Keeps the rest of us from getting too serious about this stuff.

Besides, you never know; they could be right, and as someone once told me, the main difference between a skeptic and a fool is that a skeptic remains open to all possibilities...

At least our Site is open to many possibilities, I doubt he folks our Humble Scribe is referring too are open to much in the way of opposing views.

Anyway, welcome HS, my motto is: agree to disagree and ignore the disagreeable, mostly.

It can get a little rough in here. Try to be nice and others will mostly be nice in return. Just ignore the goofs, of whom we have many.
