$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he review in American Conservative compared this book with Rudyard Kipling's poems "Recessional" and "The White Man's Burden", both written at the height of British power and warning against imperial hubris.[11] The American Spectator review listed it as adding to similar themed books, comparing it to Oswald Spengler's The Decline of the West (1918), Arnold Toynbee's A Study of History, Paul Kennedy's The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers (1987), and Robert Kagan's The Return of History and the End of Dreams (2008).[6] Kagan labeled The Post-American World as "declinist",[12] however Martin Woollacott of The Guardian labeled Zakaria an exceptionalist.[7] The Commentary review added the works of Samuel P. Huntington and Francis Fukuyama to the list of comparisons and suggested there is now a sub-genre of books that consider the decline or demise of American hegemony.[13]

Seems to be popular with elements of the intellectual right.

I think another deckchair and popcorn moment here though. Sad, looks like one of those interesting books that Id like to think leaders are reading.

Fareed Zakaria is a bit too intellectual for most Americans, but his show, GPS, is one of the better news magazines/interview shows IMO.

The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities.

Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

I'm not impressed, I'd love to see Obama with a Chomsky book on language or politics. Although I admire Chomsky's work on language and disagree with his views on politics I think he's very anti establishment. So if your reading Chomsky you either to be very well educated/intelligent (language) or anti establishment (politics).

It's funny, but as a linguist let me tell you -- most of us feel rather the other way around about Chomskys work.. :)

Obama is reading a book contemplating a globalising American style capitalism. You reckon he, (or Zakaria, a CFR man, for that matter) takes peak oil seriously?

That picture folks speaks eloquently for where America's leaders are with peak oil.

Not to defend Cash for Clunkers but it would seem that the program is directly related to peak oil. Did I miss something?

Well, to the extent that resorting to a less noxious narcotic is related to slowing the rapid onset of terminal poisoning, you are correct.
