Good news/Bad news...

Procedure went smoothly.... that's the good news.

Bad news... I'm still here.

Looks like it's bypass city on Thursday for me, as they can't stint the LAD where it's clogged (at the split)

I'm a little nervous at being split asunder frankly. I'm told the prognosis is good and I should enjoy a return to full health if all goes well.

If not... well... I'll never know it.

I'm uninsured so that's bad. Even if I had taken out insurance this would be considered preexisting, so it would not cover anything.

Thanks for all the kind thoughts & well wishes from everybody.

I'll post about the experience as soon as I am able.

or not...

Without wanting to sound too grizzly, do you know the success rate of the bypass operation in your neck of the woods? My mother in law had one in France and it went fine. Apparently it's quite routine nowadays.

You'll be fine, and you won't believe how much better you feel a few months after the op. My Mum had a triple bypass last year, I took a month off work and looked after her. She kept improving and iimproving, and 18 months later, she has more energy than she's had for decades. She's out in her garden from dawn to dusk, like I remember her when I was a kid, it's given her a total new lease on life. My neighbour had bypass surgery in '85, and is still going, in his 90s now. It's a great op. For my Mum, the biggest hassle has been trying to balance her meds so they don't make her drowsy and lethargic in the middle of the day, it's taken quite a while but she's got that sorted too. Obviously, the thought of the operation isn't too thrilling, as you say, and the initial recuperation has to be gone through, but it's all worth it. You'll be a new man! Good luck and best wishes from NZ :)

I think they will bypass his neck! LOL (a little hospital humor-very little!) Here's some other humor:

Things You Don't Want To Hear During a Surgery
- Wait a minute, if this is his spleen, then what's that?
- Hand me that... uh... whatever it's called !
- Oh no! I just lost my watch.
- "Accept this sacrifice, O Great Lord of Darkness"
- Bo! Bo! Come back with that! Bad Dog!
- Better save that. We'll need it for the autopsy.
- Oops! Hey, has anyone ever survived 500 ml of this stuff before?
- There go the lights again...
- Ya' know... there's big money in kidneys... and this guy's got two of 'em.
- Everybody stand back! I lost my contact lens!
- Could you stop that thing from beating? It's throwing my concentration off.
- What's this doing here?
- I hate it when they're missing stuff in here.
- That's cool! Now can you make his leg twitch?!
- Well folks, this will be an experiment for all of us.
-You sure it wasn't this leg?
- OK, now take a picture from this angle. This is truly a freak of nature.
- Are his relatives waiting outside?
- Nurse, did this patient sign the organ donation card?
- Don't worry. I think it is sharp enough.
- What do you mean, "You want a divorce"!
- FIRE! FIRE! Everyone get out!
- This scissor looks rusted.
- Rats! Page 47 of the manual is missing!
- Isn't this the one with the really lousy insurance?

Anybody else got any?

Funny Things you don't want to hear during surgery jokes, part 1. Every one is rated, as well; some popular examples:

After everything we did, I can't believe this guy is still alive.
An instruction manual would have been nice.

Ah, here's just a batch from page 2:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'D')on't worry, ain't nothin' a little duct tape won't cure...
Don't worry, I'll remember how to do it...OK...think back to that episode of ER...
Don't worry, you won't feel a thing. HAHAHA...I really get a kick outta saying that...
Don't worry. I think it is sharp enough.
Down...set...hut!
Everybody stand back! I lost my contact lens!
FIRE! FIRE! Everyone get out!
Forget about her heart... What she really needs is a boob job.
God performs miracles... I don't.
Hand me that...uh...that uh.....thingie.

No insurance... bad planning.

Should have been smart like me and had no income too! [smilie=5squeeze.gif]

Thinking of you as you undergo Bypass Surgery. Scary, yes but for most, life prolonging. Just do what they tell you in Cardio Rehab.
Or for free medical advice check in the Medical Issues forum for more information than you will ever need to know! :-D

Looks like Fri 10:00am CST.

Thanks again for all the well wishing.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'N')o insurance... bad planning.

Not exactly a plan per se... bad timing for sure. Got laid off about 8 years ago & when Cobra ran out I was without insurance looking for a new job when I had my first heart attack... poof... preexisting condition.

Timing as they say, is everything eh?

I have decided to send my bills directly to the White house actually... so I should be good.

Aaron, you may already know this, but apparently you can make a payment plan with the hospital. In some cases an extremely modest payment plan. And as long as you stick with your obligations, it's all good.

My dad has had open-heart surgery twice (a murmur, in his case, requiring valve replacement) and the second time he was uninsured. I think he pays them something like $100/month on a bill on the order of $25,000. No hassles that I'm aware of. He jokes that it's now in the hospital's best interest to keep him alive for decades and decades so they get their payments...

Good luck Friday -- you'll do fine, and as others have said, you'll be amazed at how much better you feel once you're back on your feet.
