No, it was specific to time sensitive applications on any platform.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'F')or you, civilization cannot collapse fast enough. And you will twist your own perception of factual reality in order to continue to convince yourself that your Olduvai fantasy is really true. But dream on! There is absolutely ZERO indication that technological innovation is slowing down. If anything, it is accelerating rapidly

That sums up the typical doomer position.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', '.')..Your predictions of quantum computing flies in the face experience and historic precedent. Changes occur not because someone visualizes a trend or expects to fill a need, but because new devices enter the society and people and the society changes to adapt. Your quantum computer is the expectation that the computer revolution will continue forever and bring us riches in the fashion we wish and hope for.
That's Expletive deleted. I'm simply noting the rapidly increasing frequency of basic research breakthroughs in the field of quantum computing.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'b')iases? ad nauseum? Here is the bias. That we can continue business as usual and expect to pull a win out of our butts. That the "miracle of science" will bail us out of our ignorance and hubris. That we can continue to steal pleasures from the green planet and future generations for the sake of our own careers or families. You want instant solutions, easy fixes, you want to escape from the humdrum of the boring ugly neighorhood your parents dumped you into.
What a bunch of hogwash.

This thread is about the increasing numbers of basic research advancements in the field of Quantum Computing. This acceleration seems to be a product of the general rapid advancement into nanotechnologies, where the laws of physics are different, and which is an exciting frontier of knowledge expansion and which offers the tantalizing, reachable possibility of vastly powerful, extremely valuable computational technologies.

This thread, at the outset, simply noted that when you see a knowledge explosion in a certain area of science, then advanced technical applications are not far behind. I noted that quantum computing used to be envisaged in some sort of Jetson's future. But, in truth, it is here now. The simplest quantum computers have now already been built.

To suggest that this progression of new learning is useless or has peaked is just another lame-ass Luddite comment from an anonymous nobody on a public discussion board where Expletive deleted. flows like a river.

Even if there were some global crisis which totally upset global society or caused some sort of die-off, the progression of innovation and new learning would only become faster -- because Human Beings are problem-solving animals and they use their brains to explore, investigate and master new knowledge and tools to permit them to conquer challenges to survival.

Just look at what WWII did for scientific research and technological development.

What does any of this have to do with energy?

With quantum/nano/supercapacitor technologies we will be able to
reduce windmills to little fluttering butterflies that will find the optimum wind patterns and bring energy back to earth for us.

Simple really :P

Another blithering idiot Luddite comment.

Just a simple question, Mr. Snippity. Hard to allocate electricity to your chip fabs if people are fixated on mundane things like lighting, too; but we've had that argument before to no real avail so forget about it.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Carlhole', 'A')nother blithering idiot Luddite comment.
This is my favorite part:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he team manufactured two artificial atoms, or qubits (quantum bits) - made up of a billion aluminum atoms, but acting like single atoms that can occupy two different energy states like the 'on' and 'off' states of regular bits employed by conventional computers.
So this <quote>quantum<closequote> computer is really made from what? aluminum siding?

Carhole there is no need to be nasty. You almost had me convinced that nanothermite brought down the WW buildings. Now I have my doubts. Anyone who falls for this stuff is a bit deluded. Don't ya think?

Oh, piss off and stay outta my threads please.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'N')o.

How about this? The necessary condition for a computational machine is a devise that can store and retrieve a particular state. When you show me a mechanical quantum gate that can accept, hold, and return a condition then I will believe that a complex computer with I/O, ALU, registers, clock, and power supply (black light?) etc. might be fabricated from such technology.

Until then. Nonsense.

This thread was intended to highlight a series recent breakthroughs leading towards quantum computing.

No matter what the field of research, you can't talk about promising breakthroughs on this dumbass site because the consistent moronic reply to such is: "I demand to see finished products for sale at Wal-Mart now".

Well, it's not for sale at Wal-Mart yet, but quantum computing now DOES exist.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Carlhole', '[')url=http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/43017/135/]First quantum processor created[/url]

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'N')ew Haven, Conn. — A team led by Yale researchers has created the first rudimentary solid-state quantum processor, a major step in the quest to build a quantum computer.

They also used the two-qubit superconducting chip to successfully run elementary algorithms such as a simple search, demonstrating quantum information processing with a solid-state device for the first time.

"Our processor can perform only a few very simple quantum tasks, which have been demonstrated before with single nuclei, atoms and photons," said Robert Schoelkopf, the William A Norton Professor of Applied Physics & Physics at Yale. "But this is the first time they've been possible in an all-electronic device that looks and feels much more like a regular microprocessor."

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'B')ut the cubit is aluminum. It is not black light. I repeat--it it al-u-min-ium. How does that contribute to 'quantum' computing.

That's the stupidest comment you've made so far. WTF does black light have to do with anything? Who knows WTF you're talking about.

The Yale researchers used about a billion aluminum atoms in building their quantum computing device.
