U.S. Mint suspends Buffalo gold coins after depletion Link

NEW YORK - The U.S Mint said Thursday it was temporarily suspending sales of American Buffalo 24-karat gold one-ounce bullion coins because strong demand depleted its inventory.
"Demand has exceeded supply for American Buffalo 24-karat gold one-ounce bullion coins, and our inventories have been depleted. We are, therefore, temporarily suspending sales of these coins," the Mint said in a memorandum to authorized American Buffalo dealers.

Oh no! You'd never believe this, but a masked ninja broke into my house yesterday and stole ALL my gold. It was terrible. I was so traumatized, I forgot to report it. How am I going to replace it now? Oh well. Easy come easy go.

US Mint suspends sale of 24 karat gold coins

Unread postby Art_Vandelai » Fri 26 Sep 2008, 15:43:03

LINK

Incedentally, I was at a major bank's main precious metals desk today...they were completely out of silver bars - only offered coins, which carry about 100% markup on the silver content.

It seems that supply of physical metals is squeezed incredibly tight right now, even though the futures aren't moving dramatically.

Where are you buying from. I go to the main Scotiabank precious metals desk and buy maple leaf 1oz silver coins and get a good price. There is a smelters and minters premium but that's not that much.
Gold coins are expensive because of a tax on them, which isn't on gold bullion. Silver doesn't have that tax.

RdSnt...that's exactly where I went.

no silver bars available today ...only 1 oz silver coins.

FYI - They do have round gold 'bars" which are essentially coins, but minted by a Swiss company with the Scotiabank logo instead of the Royal Canadian mint. Same 99.99 purity, and no provincial sales tax.

Very interesting, thanks. I haven't been in a couple of weeks so this is a recent change. I've noted the unavailability in the States but not here.

I don't buy silver to get ahead, it's for wealth preservation and for the potential time when our paper currency goes to zero. Since the US dollar is the reserve currency, when it drops to zero so does everyone elses.
Plus they are pretty and make great gifts, since I've given all mine away
