New movie about Bananas coming out...Dole suing!

Postby frankthetank » Sat 11 Jul 2009, 09:28:22

Looks like Dole doesn't like what is being portrayed in this movie:

I talked about this years ago on this very forum. Looks like someone finally wants to shed some light on the subject.

Here is the chemical we are looking at...

lawns should be outlawed.

Good day from Pheba:
Until the film is available, I recommend the book:
"Banana: The Fate of the fruit that changed the World"
Author is Dan Koeppel.
Read the book, and you will never eat a banana again.
I put some thought to it and realized that it is insane to be consuming a fruit
from a tropical region.
There will soon come a day when it is not technically feasible to transport such items because of peak oil.
There is more potassium in a potato than in a banana.
Perhaps the time has to come to ask ourselves not what we want, but what we need.
Pheba.

Only time i like bananas is in a fruit smoothy. Otherwise i don't eat them very often. They turn black too fast.

I hate that there is no variety. They just use the stupid Cavendish (i think). There are a lot of different bananas out there with lots of different flavors.
lawns should be outlawed.

I'm with Frank, they're great in a beverage. It's locally grown fruits for the rest of the mix though - including apples and cherries out of my yard. You can keep anything fresh in a freezer, natch; or dry them into chips etc.

Blog: Banana: The Fate of the Fruit that Changed the World. Yes, we have bananas. Local markets have some of the funkier brown dwarf varieties, too.

Bananas have a lot of starch so I don't generally eat them. They can be a problem with the whole glucose insulin thing. I've started using them around my workouts though to give a little glucose boost. For the last week I've been eating a half a banana about 30 minutes before my workout and a whole banana right after. It seems to be working pretty well. I'm continuing to lose weight and I have more energy during workouts.

During my peak fitness period prior to 10 years ago, I would typically eat two regular standard bananas prior to each powerlifting session. It would cheer me up, defend against cramps, and at that time I didn't care about eating local.

Now, it's a rare day when we have bananas in the house. We really try to keep to the 50 mile rule which means we don't have citrus any more. Oh, sometimes we get a lemon for cooking or orange juice.

Yes, partly. That and we like what is grown right here in the Pacific Northwest. :)

This movie is about Nemagon not bananas.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]What is Nemagon?

... skip ...

Dow and Shell exported as much as 24 million pounds of Nemagon each year during the 1970s until 1977 (4).

From 1977-1979, DBCP registrations were suspended by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which stopped most applications except for use on pineapples in Hawaii. In 1985, the EPA canceled all registrations (5).

Even as early as 1961, an internal Shell report recommended using impermeable protective clothing to prevent contact with the skin, because the product could have undesirable consequences for human reproduction (2, 6).

DBCP interrupts the hormones that act as the body’s “chemical messengers”. This can increase cancer risk and affect the reproduction system.

On of my garden plots here in San Diego actually has a small banana tree in it - came with the plot. For kicks I'm keeping it going to see if it actually does anything. Sure sucks a lot of water though...

You pretty much need to plant them in a grey water basin unless you want to irrigate almost every day.

They use a TON of water. Those big leaves need it. I grow them up here in Wisconsin, have for 3 years now. Mine are pretty big.

Bananas feed Africa. I was reading a big expensive book out at B&N about Africa and it talked about how a huge amount of calories consumed in Africa come from bananas (plantains).

The bananas i saw down in Florida were gigantic.
I'm over 6ft tall.

Those look like Super Dwarf Cavendish... In my top photo, to the far right is a big clump of them. They are pupping like mad and i need to repot a bunch of them. They are very tropical bananas (unlike the big Musa basjoos i grow) and they will flower even up here, but it takes them a few years and the conditions need to be right.
lawns should be outlawed.

They aren't!

I have to dig up a HUGE corm with as much height as i can get (cut off all the leaves) and drag it to the basement. I cover it with a bag and let it sit all winter. I do this with almost 30 bananas. Only twice a year, so not that bad.

Bananas are cool because they are such fast growing plants.
