Arlington County, VA now bans bottled water for purchase by Gov't

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')RLINGTON, Va. – Citing the environmental impact of single-serving bottled water, the Arlington County Board today banned the purchase of such bottles by County government.

In a resolution, the Board said that the transport of single-serving bottled water “involves burning massive quantities of fossil fuels.” Millions of such bottles are not recycled they have become “a prime source of litter and pollution in the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers,” the Board noted.

Debate ongoing in local papers

(Guess what position they take !)

And, the rebuttle...

Lately I have been noticing that the large quanity bottles of water, the ones that are like 7.99 for 20 16.9 ounces bottles are made of plastic so thin, it is about as durable as a piece of paper, the stuff just crinkles in your hand. I refuse to drink from those bottles, they appear to be biodegrading right before my eyes.

Since I posted, crowing about getting alpine water through the taps on the banks of Lake Como, I've moved to a very flat part of France.

I recently saw the analysis of the local tap water, and it's full of pesticides. I've since ordered my wife to buy lots of bottled water, and not to drink from the taps.

Bottled water is not expensive here, and is a very small percentage of total water consumption. So, I consider it a necessary evil (oh, and we recycle the bottles).

And the next person who states that Evian is naive backwards gets a slap
What we think, we become.

Yes, I've seen those and it's not as appealing as a nice sturdy bottle. Kind of the opposite of that is what I see at the ballgames that have gone more to the high-end aluminum "bottles". These things look and feel like they are made from aircraft-grade aluminum and they can't be crushed.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('jdumars', 'y')ou can poo poo bottled water all you want, but the truth of the matter is many municipal water supplies are tainted with heavy metals, chlorine, fluoride, and other chemical pollutants. We can water our garden extensively with city water, and it doesn't seem to make that much of a difference. One good rain and stuff absolutely explodes with growth.

I've noticed that. Every month or so, we get a letter that our city drinking water fails federal guidelines for safety and contains known carcinogens, and "if we think we have cancer, to please see a physician". I'm not making this up. But we gave up drinking the local water (Burnet, Texas) ten years ago (and subsequently stopped having diarrhea and stomach aches). Bought a Berkey a while back and recommend it for everyone.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('GASMON', 'M')y town gets its water from a river originating on the nearby pennine moors. It has a nice, soft peaty taste.

I've had a bit peaty water from Loch Nam Ban in the Islay region of Scotland. It was a small company called Caol Ila. Only they has some strange process for the water involving malting, fermenting and distilling. 8)

Gasmon, Bing told me to be wary of the bottled water sold in asia by street vendors, as the source of the water is questionable.
