What about "soda-pop"?

I never say 'pop' or 'soda' (nor soda-pop); I always say "pepsi" or "dew" or "sprite". Saying soda or pop just sounds dirty to me. It never quite rolls off the tongue and it's too general for something that shouldn't be general - people have preferences and detail is important if you're telling a story.

I've always called it "soda pop" and drawn strange looks in the process.

In the Midwest (Toledo) it's pop. In the northeast it's soda. If you ask for a pop in Boston you'll get a black eye.

Yes! Exactly! And in the Midwest when you say “soda” we keep waiting for you too finish your sentence like “Soda Rabbi says to the….”

Then there’s that little thingy about half the East Coast not knowing we have an “R” in out alphabet so we can never tell what you are talking about half the time when saying things like “Soda the Jew paked his ca ova in da gaage……”

WHF is that? 8O

Here, it is mineral (that's Ireland for you).

Guess you would get a strange look if you walked up to a bar in NYC and asked for a mineral

I made the mistake of ordering 'pop' while in San Francisco several years back, and the server asked me if I 'came from the farm.' I told her no, I came from the Twin Cities area ( a decent-sized metro area with several million people, for those that don't know). Her reply: 'Close enough'

so that's why they do that. I was only 13 at the time but thought either they were very insightful, or I still had straw in my hair.

Ahhhh yes, good ol’ San Francisco ………..“She” was probably just being all pompous and crass about others coming from the farm because no matter how hard she tried, she just couldn’t cover up that Adam’s Apple the farm people kept noticing and were snickering about it every time she turned around.
