British Totalitarian Nightmare

Postby mattduke » Thu 25 Jun 2009, 21:56:48

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'M')ore than 700 “controlled drinking zones” have been set up across England, giving police sweeping powers to confiscate beer and wine from anyone enjoying a quiet outdoor tipple.

Local authorities are introducing the zones at a rate of 100 a year, The Times has learnt. Some cover whole cities, a radical departure from what the law intended.

Once a control zone is in place, police can seize alcohol from anyone who is not on licensed premises, even if the bottles or cans are unopened. Although drinking is not banned in the zones, police can ask anyone to stop drinking and it is an offence to refuse, punishable by a maximum £500 fine. No explanation or suspicion that the person could be a public nuisance is required. The highest fine will soon rise to £2,500.

Drinking outdoors is pretty much outlawed in the US. Lots of laws about walking around with open containers, driving with open containers..thinking about walking around with an open container, being in the general vicinity of an open container, etc. But don't forget we are the land of the free.

In Oregon we have similar laws. No public drinking. In Portland these laws are enforced by a private security company with the authority to cite and lawfully ban people from parks if they're caught with alcohol in their possession opened or not. These private security guards ride around on bikes or on foot looking for people drinking. When they see one they don't warn. They cite. Pretty crazy. Privatized law enforcement. Where else could this happen??

I also remember when that law was introduced. I was sitting by the fountain in Romford, 20 odd years ago, with a can of beer when a copper told me a new law was in and I had to get rid of it.

It didnt stop any trouble though that I saw. During the 90s drinking became a real social problem with even quiet village pubs needing bouncers on the doors to stop the violence.

Romford went on to become the most likely place to be stabbed in the South East.

In the tourist district of Vegas and Reno you can have a open container and walk up and down the sidewalks while drinking, they even sell beer on the streets here during certain times. [only in the tourist districts next to the casinos]

Nevada might just be the last real free place in America.. :-D

An old mucker of mine used to drop acid and sit on the circle line for hours giggling at people from behind a newspaper.

Its always an option if they realy try to enforce the ban.

Gasmon - Saturday night in Wigan you don't need a drink, you'd get pissed on the fumes from the local lasses! :)

Thats why the biggest nightclub in Wigan is nicknamed "Crufts of Wigan" !!! Town centre a no-go area for me - £4 a pint, loads of kids, bouncers, police etc.

As per most British towns, plenty (but ever reducing in number) of nice pubs around the towns outskirts, some nice real ale pubs too. You can't argue at Boddingtons bitter £1.60 / pint, and 6 widescreen TV's showing rugby & football.

A Friday night out once a fortnight for me, these days.

Gasmon

.

Gasmon, Quinny, if you want to find the last civilised country that allows public drinking, move to Germany.

They're all very polite and don't bat an eyelid at people drinking from cans in the street, on trams etc. Now that is civilised.

I went out with a wonderful German woman a fews years back. She lived in a little town called Bocholt and when I visited her she used to drop me off in town while she went to work. She used to like it when I had a little too much to drink. She was the only woman I've known who actually said she preferred me when I was drunk. There never seemed any embarassment at having too much too drink. She was also very rich. 8)

There's plenty of ways to hide alcohol.

I used to like to mix vodka, ice, orange juice, and orange sorbet in a blender, and pour into a fast food shake cup(such as a Stake & Shake cup; it was passable for an orange freeze). Another favorite is frozen pineapple juice blended with pineapple sorbet and coconut rum. Provided you use no more than 2 shots per 24 oz, it is undetectable by smell or taste.

Further, save your marijuana stems; you can soak them in liquor over a month and get enough THC from them to have an effect. Such infused liquor also works well with above-mentioned drink.

Just don't be an ass while intoxicated, and you will be extremely unlikely to get caught!

Nice Toecutter, gonna have to give that one a try. It really works?
And I think you hit the nail on the head about being an ass while intoxicated. Might this be the reason for the clampdown mentioned by the OP?
As an aside how many people while high on pot, act totally out of control, compared to those drinking alcohol? In my experience pot just mellows you out, and lets you laugh at the sillyness of the world. 8O
