The Psychology of working in isolation

Unread postby Energy24 » Thu 25 Jun 2009, 02:52:31

I was recently talking to an engineer who worked in the oil sands area in Canada he yearned to work in Australia where although many of the locations are remote they are better equipt for families.

How do we cope with working in isolated and remote locations?
A good book and an ipod? or can it just not be done?

Well depends upon what you call isolation and work but...........there are many, many good reads about long term cruisers. People living a shoestring while traveling around the world.

The general idea is to reduce your consumption and required budget. The best I know of is Voyaging on a Small Income by Annie Hall. Also Beth Leonard has a couple of good books on the subject, real detailed and up to date data.

They support themselves by writing and fixing things. Annie has worked something like five years in her life and amassed enough capital to live on. Beth claims to live the high life on about $1,400/month ($20,000 for 18 months actually) and she and her partner have a VERY nice boat and go everywhere. But, both are very careful and at least parts of their lives are pretty remote.

Google Annie, she has a web site up but it does not address the financial side.

Can't be done??? You are way to attatched to the rest of humanity. Spending even a year or two away from the rest of the human race sounds like heaven.

Here is a blog of a guy who is breaking the solo sailing record. His plan is 1000 days alone out of the sight of land.

He is at 793 days right now. NASA helped sponsor the mission for the psyche effect of long term missions for Mars.
