Found this link full of pictures of an abandoned amusement park somewhere in Japan.

Pretty creepy. I think this is what we have to look forward to with a lot of the useless junk we have. What happens to Disney Land when people have lost their jobs and can't afford to go? What happens when the airlines are going out of business and can't bring the people who can afford to go?

The abandoned buildings and equipment will provide a lot of material for recycling.

In the long run, that's quite possibly true. I can't imagine it happening when it should though.. say, like, immediately. Seeing Mickey's home torn down and turned into scrap metal will probably be too much for Joe six pack and his family to bear. Even in the face of massive energy shortages. For the average person, going along with the scrapping of entire amusement parks would be the equivalent of admitting the world as they knew it is over and never coming back. I don't think they'll be willing to do that.

Fabulously creepy.

Imagine a life form--or descendants of humans--coming on all this junk in the future:

"What were these creatures thinking? Use up the world's most precious resource for a THRILL? They must have been insane."

If oil magically never ran out, we would have eventually built robots that would do most of our manual work for us. In order to calm the unemployed masses, we would need hundreds of new amusement parks. Rome had its gladiator fights, we have football and Disney Land

Amusement Parks and Peak Oil

Unread postby Jogger » Fri 23 Jun 2006, 02:37:29

Everyone,

Are you planning a visit to Great America or another amusement park this summer? What do you think the future outlook is for the amusement park industry in the United States and around the world with Peak Oil looming?

Well I am not planning on blowing my money on one of those any time soon. But I think the future for these places are mixed. Mixed because some may fare better than others. Most require significant amounts of electricity to operate (ever see the power lines leading to Disney??). Those parks probably will be eaten alive by ever rising costs and ever falling attendence due to worsening economic conditions. Plus during rolling blackouts, this use will likely be considered "non essential" and frequently cut off.

But the smaller more basic parks that have low energy demands, low admission costs and a thoroughly local draw will probably do fine.

Here is another thought: A century ago many "amusement parks" featured more interactive, though far less energy intensive attractions. Things like the hall of mirrors, fun house, sack slides and other hands-on attractions along with lots of midway skill challanges predominated these parks. Rides were simple. Places like these may make a comeback, and those that never vanished will most likely continue to thrive.

I saw a show on Disney world. The place is going top be a scrap deelers paradise. Miles and miles of steel and that in just one ride.
Was a long and dark December
