$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Jogger', 'E')veryone,
Are you planning a visit to Great America or another amusement park this summer? What do you think the future outlook is for the amusement park industry in the United States and around the world with Peak Oil looming?
Well I am not planning on blowing my money on one of those any time soon. But I think the future for these places are mixed. Mixed because some may fare better than others. Most require significant amounts of electricity to operate (ever see the power lines leading to Disney??). Those parks probably will be eaten alive by ever rising costs and ever falling attendence due to worsening economic conditions. Plus during rolling blackouts, this use will likely be considered "non essential" and frequently cut off.
But the smaller more basic parks that have low energy demands, low admission costs and a thoroughly local draw will probably do fine.
Here is another thought: A century ago many "amusement parks" featured more interactive, though far less energy intensive attractions. Things like the hall of mirrors, fun house, sack slides and other hands-on attractions along with lots of midway skill challanges predominated these parks. Rides were simple. Places like these may make a comeback, and those that never vanished will most likely continue to thrive.
