Eh.. it's amazing for sure.. but I feel for the cat. It was just doin it's job. Then again, I would have felt sorry for the animal the cat ate. What's the ratio of predators vs prey (not counting humans as either)...?

I was just telling my ex this morning that one of the things mules are known for is protecting their riders. They may get filed down but those hooves are nothing to smirk at man!

I wonder how many people are rethinking how they would treat any mules or donkeys they might own in the future when the animal has a bad day!

Meh. That's the risk you take when you ride.

The first picture looks fake. The shadows are all messed up. Maybe it really happened and someone just dramatized the pictures. Sort of like a television true crime reenactment with a dead cougar!

I am seriously thinking of getting mules instead of horses. A mule will work as hard as a horse but it is a much smarter animal and knows when it can't work anymore.

A horse will just keep on until it falls over dead.

Also mules are known for being much calmer than horses and from this story apparently more resolute and courageous.

Those facts are all true of mules... to a certain extent. It's a generalisation of course, my own horse is exceptionally calm and brave. But he would work himself into the ground for me. It's my job as a horsewoman to know my horse, and judge how well he can cope with the work I'm asking him to do. It's a skill that has to be learned. Most draught horses are very quiet (but then you get the odd exception, as in Mules).

Also, horses can make baby horses, mules cannot.

Don't get me wrong though, mules rock. I'll probably get one myself eventually. Won't replace the horses though.

I suggest stick to burros. Small, same toughness as a mule or better, capable of reproduction, can be used to ride and/or haul stuff plus they eat and drink less. Drawback: can't haul as much weight.

I have heard that if you plan to herd goats, get a burro and turn him or her loose in the flock to watch over them. They will protect the goats from coyotes and other predators.

Montequest should be able to weigh in on this issue since out west these little guys are still used as pack animals.

That's awesome!

Reminds me of a story from Vancouver Island a couple of years ago. A guy was walking back to his house and got jumped by a cougar. Now normally I would root for the wild animals doing their normal thing in their normal habitat. This guy managed to stab the cougar to death with a little 3" folding pocket knife. I think that's a pretty fair fight. That guy is entitled to poke out his chest and strut a bit for the rest of his life.
