Yea but as a musician myself, I find it hard to deny a tribute to such a fine player.

I tend to be on Neil Young's side of the tracks on this matter. But...

The political undertones of a bands music is besides the point for me.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')hen they wrote this crap, the black man was still trash in the south and Tricky Dick was harassing Daniel Ellsburg (that's why they broke into Watergate) for telling the truth about Nixon and Vietnam. Short memories.

When I was a young guy (pre-teen)and first heard Sweet Home, I didn't know what they were even singing about. Who cared?
It's a great song.
I'm into heavy metal. Death, thrash, black etc...
Lyrics aren't that important to me.

Based on interviews I've seen with Ronnie Van Zant and other members of the band I don't believe the band or Sweet Home Alabama is remotely racist or even conservative. Some of their fans may be though.

Van Zant often wore a Neil Young T-shirt on stage

RIP to a friend

One of the most beautiful, selfless, calm, loving, and brave men I ever knew was gunned down in cold blood while sitting in his church this morning. link Words escape me right now.

Re: Christian jihadists strike in Kansas

Postby wisconsin_cur » Sun 31 May 2009, 21:35:54

Emotions are running high. A man was killed and in all places a church, as his wife sat in the choir, as children sat looking at books their parents bring to keep them quiet, as people prayed, men thought of golf or lunch.

A man was killed. A man someone we know and respect knew as a person and not as a charactature or just as a job description but as a person.

Whatever we think of the nature of the debate on abortion, whatever we think of those who preform late term abortion, a man was murdered in cold blood, in church and, as far as anyone knows never broke the law and never faced a jury of his peers. This is not only illegal but settled public morality.

I have argued with SPG on the abortion question and I mourn the passing of this man in this senseless act of violence.

I am calling a 12 hour freeze on the debate of the morality of abortion. We have been discussing the issue for 36 years, it can wait that long to resume. I will change the title of this thread and we will use it to pass our condolences to those who lost a friend.

The abortion debate can start again at 8:35 am (Central United States) on Monday June 1

Very sorry to hear that. :( I've been lucky to never have lost a friend to murder (as far as I know).

Please accept my condolences, SPG. None of us are ever prepared for the sudden death of someone we care about, especially in an area we regard as secure, so this must surely be a shock to you.

It takes considerable courage to do what one regards as right despite the vocal criticism of others. It is to your friend's credit that he followed his conscience. Ultimately, we all will pass - but I think it is better to do so as the master of our fears, rather than as their slave. Your friend had clearly accomplished that state.

Take care of yourself, SPG. We need more smart people, and you're one of them.

I don't know any of you, but I would like to offer my condolences.

Losing people through any means is tough. I've lost a cousin to suicide and two granparents to illness. So yeah, it's harsh. I know.

Just flow with the grief, let it run its course.

SPG-I already sent you a PM before I found this thread. To restate, I heard one of his speeches today on the radio as well as a couple of ladies who worked with him. I regret not knowing more about him before now. I'm sorry to hear of him in this way. Take care of yourself out there.

Sorry to hear this as well SPG. It's amazing these moronic religious nuts call themselves "christians". God these people piss me off.
