She was picked so that the GOP would alienate the largest voting block ( women) and the fastest growing minority ( latinos) and ensure DEM dominance for probably forever.

Seems to be working.

The GOP needs to stop talking to only their base.

They are going mad.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Schmuto', 'I')f you allow 5 BOZOS IN ROBES to change the rules whenever they please, then you have no rules.

One bozo in an oval office is better? Or 100 in a senate chamber? The whole thing is a scam.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')nd by the way, of the three or four dozen women I know who have had abortions, they were hardly "vulnerable."

They reminded me a lot of you, SPG.

Clue phone Tarzan. The vulnerable ones aren't going to talk to you about it. They can't even talk to eachother about it. I'm gonna spend 20 minutes holding their hand and handing them Kleenex because there's nobody else in the world they feel safe talking to about it and some "sidewalk counselor" just shoved a 6 foot tall photo of a bloody mangled "fetus" in their face and yelled at them about they were murdering their baby.

When you have Lords Cheney and Rumsfeld and propaganda minister Rove
remodel your tent, you get a rare combination of skills that come together
and form a team. First rate American corporate cannibalism decides which
parts are outside your narrow spike of ideology and drives off what they can't
sell off for a quick buck, then a man who believes the right weapons technology
and 3 people who rotate shifts so one is always awake, should run the universe,
extols how we can know the unknowable but unknowingly know the known is
often unknown until he bullshits himself into suspended animation and becomes
more useful for the sideshow, next to the bearded lady, than for the main tent.
In order to shrink a tent like this you need time, and you buy time with scaring
those you can, and playing Sgt. Schultz and seeing nothing while the ones
who don't scare easy opt to explore the new field of Gaussian kinky economics.
Last and not least, you allow the propaganda minister to smoothly slide to
the center ring on a shimmering track of slime and delight that with the tent
now shrunken to Fuhrer Bunker size, he can whisper sweet and snarky
nothings before he intones that "the tent has now been optimized for the
true circus lover, and everyone gets a free round of fear on the house".
The clowns, being organized, strike at having their labor usurped and
picket outside the tent until they get hungry and go home.

I think someone forgot they were making tents for elephants or else
they thought if Rush fit inside, they had it made in the shade.
A party formed this circus and brought it to town, they joined ranks
and stood behind it loyally and rock solid, they told us that it was the
very best they had to offer.

I believe them.

I will however, always remember the act where all the money was made to
disappear and people were told to look for it in the next circus to come to
town. If these were carnies instead of true blue circus hands, I think it
might have upset a few people.

Who cares either way?

This isn't about fair.

Men don't get pregnant, so the ramifications of them screwing around without protection aren't the same.

Schmuto's opt out rule - - -

If . . .
A. Abortion is legal.
and
B. A man has no say in making a woman get an abortion.
and
C. A man is stuck with paying 18 years of support if the woman doesn't kill the kid,

then

D. There should be an opt-out provision. Chick has 2 months to alert male to fact she is pregnant with his and, if he chooses to pay 1/2 for the abortion and she says no, then he gets to opt out of child support payments and the child's support is 100% her responsibility.

Schmuto, the only place I could imagine such a view of the
situation is if the scenario was spied by a spirochete looking
out into the world from the distal end of a male urethra and
hurting from the bight lights, ducked his head back inside
and just made the rest up. I now am convinced that the milk

Wow, that belongs in "bold predictions" thread.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('cbxer55', 'B')oy is that opening a can of worms! Anyone remember Miguel Estrada? After aggressively blocking Estrada's nomination to a federal appeals court during Bush's first term solely on the grounds that he is Hispanic and was likely headed for the Supreme Court -- according to Senate Democrat staff memos -- now Democrats have the audacity to rave that Sotomayor will be the first Hispanic Supreme Court justice!
If Sotomayor is not more empathetic than Estrada, liberals at least consider her more Hispanic -- an interesting conclusion inasmuch as Sotomayor was born in New York and Estrada was born in Honduras.
Forty-four of 48 Senate Democrats voted to filibuster Estrada's nomination to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, with congressman and professional Hispanic Raul Grijalva assuring them that just because "he happens to be named 'Estrada' does not give him a free ride." :x
The truth is liberals couldn't care less about Sotomayor being Hispanic. Indeed, liberals often have trouble telling Hispanic people apart, as James Carville illustrated on "Good Morning America" Wednesday morning when he kept confusing Miguel Estrada with Alberto Gonzales.

Niely made point, CB. :) You are right, of course politics ALWAYS comes before gender and race. But it's the Republicans who have made race an issue with this nomination. They have a bit of a point about that ruling over the firefighters.

But what's deplorable is that the Repubs are being so dramatic about it with the "Latino racist" slur. They are INTENTIONALLY trying to stoke the fire of white anger towards minorities. This is the ultimate in psychological projection, fanning the flames of white racism by charging their opponents with racism!

To be clear, I'm no Sotomayor fanboy. If anything, I have concerns that perhaps the most qualified nominee was not selected because the administration did, in fact, want a "latino woman." Both sides have made this mistake, the Republicans wanted a black (and nominated the less-than-stellar Thomas) and then they wanted a woman (and they offered up the embarassingly unqualified Hariett Myers).

The Repubs really don't need to resort to race baiting to criticize this nominee -- there are more legitimate questions, like her emotional stability on the bench and her intellectual suitability for the highest court.

But these are minor points in the end, and this woman IS going to get confirmed. The Senate repubs KNOW they have to stop beating up on Latinos or they'll never escape from the electoral wilderness. The fact remains folks, you cannot win national elections with just Southern white votes anymore.

This little nomination drama over Sotomayor is a moot point -- she's gonna get confirmed, and the balance of power on the court hasn't changed anyway. All that the Repubs are doing is trying to scare up some angry white votes -- that didn't work for them in the last election, and it ain't gonna work going forward.(unless Obama bankrupts the nation, then all hail our new overlord Mitt Romney ;) )

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('cbxer55', 'Y')ou say the republican's need to do something about race. Did I not just show that we tried to appoint a hispanic during G.W. Bush's first term, and the democrats shot him down.
From my perspective it looks like the democrats need to do something about race.
Yeah we know the b--ch is going to get appointed, even though she is probably the least qualified for the job.
But hey, we already know how that works, since the guy least qualified to be president is in the white house.
And it shows every freakin time he opens his mouth and reads the tele-prompter.

Not really disagreeing with you but for all the PC Libspeakers out there - HISPANIC IS NOT A RACE. It is at best an ethnicity and really more like some subjective definition of "slightly more tan person of European descent"... A good chunk of "Hispanics" don't even have any American Indian blood. To this day Central American Indian and American Indian populations get second rate treatment even in "Hispanic" countries.

When did the Democrat party die? :-D

To be fair, neither major party would claim such a label, and to be honest, neither major party has a historically constant set of viewpoints anyway, so trying to identify one party with a set of viewpoint labels is pretty pointless.

Now, I am *not* saying the next party to defeat a sitting Democrat will be the Republican party, but its not an unreasonable bet either. However, if you think the Democrats are going to rule forever because of one marginal sweep in the midst of an economic meltdown, you must really be smokin something potent.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('smallpoxgirl', 'I') don't see how you get that. The Comstock laws were passed about the same time as most of the abortion bans in the US-the mid 1800s. Seems more that we have a long history of governments extirpating privacy within marriage.

from wikipedia: [[: The Comstock Act not only targeted pornography as such, but also all contraceptive equipment and many educational documents such as descriptions of contraceptive methods and other reproductive health-related materials. The ban on contraceptives was declared unconstitutional by the courts in 1936, though the remaining portions of the law continue to be enforced today.]]

Since Comstock Act was passed in 1873 and knocked down in 1936, I would consider it both short-term aberation AND a case of overreach going beyond obscenity and pornography.

Many more years of history supporting privacy in marriage, such as spousal privilege which dates back to English common law.

I'm not sure 63 years out of 232 years of American history (more if you count colonial) represents a long history.

Court Overturns Sotomayor

Now just imagine if Obamoa's choice for the Supreme Court gets onto the bench!! Wake up America!!!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he Supreme Court ruled Monday that white firefighters in New Haven, Conn., were unfairly denied promotions because of their race, reversing a decision that high court nominee Sonia Sotomayor endorsed as an appeals court judge.

How fitting that the city got sued for discrimination because the action they took was to keep from getting sued for discrimination. The idea that discrimination against men and whites is acceptable is wrong and this case is a step in the right direction. We have traded potential and perceived discrimination for guaranteed discrimination thru the quota and "Equal Opportunity" laws and programs.

In a true meritocracy those of ability and drive will be able to thrive. Too bad much of the west has destroyed or damaged the system of merit that allowed them to become first world countries. Perhaps this is why we are falling relative to the East now?

When you discriminate or show preference FOR something you are discriminating AGAINST the rest.

OK, so the Robert's court already said it's OK to discriminate against women, and age discrimination is OK too. Oh, and your house can be seized if someone with more money wants to build something there. I guess this pretty covers all the bases then.

Sonia Sotomayor

Unread postby vision-master » Thu 16 Jul 2009, 14:31:53

I'm starting to get pissed, real pissed!

Sonia Sotomayor
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'E')arlier this year, President Obama's Supreme Court nominee joined an opinion with the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that Second Amendment rights do not apply to the states.

A 2004 opinion she joined also cited as precedent that "the right to possess a gun is clearly not a fundamental right."

Ken Blackwell, a senior fellow with the Family Research Council, called Obama's nomination a "declaration of war against America's gun owners."
