What are you going to tell the president when he calls?

Unread postby johnmarkos » Thu 21 Apr 2005, 13:00:59

Here's a hypothetical scenario I thought folks might enjoy.

It's 8 PM. You have just finished dinner and are relaxing with whatever substance it is that relaxes you. Suddenly, out of the blue, the phone rings. It's President Bush! He sounds a little depressed and freaked out. He says,
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'L')isten, I'm a little freaked out and I need your help. Jenna forwarded me the link to lifeaftertheoilcrash.net and I was up all night reading about peak oil. After lifeaftertheoilcrash.net, I surfed on over to peakoil.com and I discovered your posts. You seem like the most thoughtful, intelligent, and eloquent person there. I need you to give me a plan -- something I can tell the Congress so we can get moving on peak oil. Also, I'll be glad to call all the other presidents, prime ministers, kings, queens, and dictators and we can really get going on this problem.

I've been reading about peak oil and resource depletion all night but one thing I haven't heard is a plan that I can really act on. That's what I need, and that's where you come in. Please tell me what I should do next and I'll definitely take your advice to heart.

What do you tell him? What is your plan for the president?

Wrong number. GW Bush is on my do not call list. :)

Not not he would do it, but I would say to add a sales tax to
all fossil fuels, use the money for subsidies to implement wind
and solar and increase the government efficiency requirements
for vehicles and appliances.

This is not a solution -- it's a treatment. The solution is for the
world to greatly reduce energy demands. The end game is known,
it's the path and timing of energy reduction that's in question.

(1) Present to the world the US fait accompli of the occupation of Iraq and establishment of US military bases

(2) Declare the world on the precipice of an energy disaster and that an immediate international summit of nations is necessary

(3) Determine worldwide petroleum reserves as accurately as possible

(4) Develop a year-by-year worldwide conservation agenda including petroleum rationing and price controls

a. Increase use of public transportation
b. Tax breaks for hybrids
c. etc, etc.

(5) Commence an international mega-project for renewable/alternative energy technologies and basic research science such as nanotechnology techniques, etc towards solving technical problems

(6) Develop state-of-the-art nuclear power generation technology standardized worldwide and regulated by a worldwide body, standards and common locations for waste disposal, etc.

(7) Expansion of internet networks to make transportation expenses less necessary

(8) Develop plans to re-localize agriculture

(9) Mass-education

(10) Ask Henry Kissinger for his advice about our population problems

I suppose I could keep going and fill in specific measures for each category. It all seems so commonsensical yet utterly naive. The human race seems designed to do commonsensical things only after great violence has settled the question of who gets to dispense the commonsense. That's what the Bush Administration has been doing ever since 911.

People go to war over resources. I'm expecting some sort of major conflict if Peak Oil arrives sooner rather than later and the world has not had the chance to adapt. Maybe Bush doesn't need my advice.

Let the market play out on its own Mr. President because the last thing we need is Washington crashing the economy right now by crying wolf.

So the public is paying a little more for gas now, its just a matter of giving up a Happy Meal or two weekly in order to do so and they will refine their fuel tastes fast enough over the next few years. We didn’t get to be number one by being stupid and I’m not expecting that to chance anytime soon.

P.S. Great job in Iraq btw, its about time the families & friends of those killed and the many maimed in Desert Storm & Desert Shield saw that smile wiped of Saddam and his cronies faces. Plus, the Middle East was long past due for being stabilized and the new Kabul to Baghdad corridor is a grand start.

Lean on the Saudis and others to provide third party audited reports on the state of their oil fields. Treat any country that does not meet a minimum of openness about the state of their oil industry as a pariah state who we can't trust as a supplier for our energy needs.

Actually, I was thinking already. I'm a liberal Democrat and a tax and spender to boot. I never met a tax increase I didn't like. Time and again, I have voted to tax myself. :) Nonetheless, if he wants to chat, I'll give him my 8 point plan. Also, I'll point him to MonteQuest's plan from, "The Big Picture," with my amendments, of course. Then I'll tell him to call Richard Smalley.

Ask him why I bothered to vote for him, and state that if our leaders are not aware of how to circumvent this problem, then what makes him think that the sheeple dependent on the government, (and actually trust the government), expect to deal with it?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Leaf', ' ')I know some about your ranch but I would be scared to live there in the years ahead.

I wouldn't be scared to live there. He is going to have his own secret service team protecting him until the day he dies. Talk about a golden parachute. No wonder he smiles so much, I would too.

You've got some weird fanatasies!

If GW called me I'd say:

"G-W, uhhhhh, I don't know how to break this to you but the global economy is about to crumble and there's nothing that we can do without a miracle. If you want to save your own ass you'd better build an environmentally friendly completely self-sufficient house somewhere in the mid-west, in complete isolation, and stock it with food enough for a long-long time. Hey, if you build this Eden can I come?"

If GW called me I'd laugh and say 'your house of cards is about to fall cowboy, now get your damn bases out of my country!'

And I'd stand by the wire at RAF Fairford and wave the lads a good journey home back across the pond.
