THE Rep. Roscoe Bartlett Thread (merged)

General discussions of the systemic, societal and civilisational effects of depletion.

About 25 minutes

Unread postby joewp » Thu 21 Apr 2005, 00:06:32

He spoke for about 25 minutes, sort of a condensed version of the long one. He had some new charts, too. One was very interesting that showed a graph of wood, coal, oil and nuclear by amount of energy, versus time.

He was slightly more forceful, but IMHO he was still too optimistic about alternative's ability to replace the energy, but he did emphasize conservation and had a chart of US per capita energy use versus California's. US rose while CA's remained flat.

Nutshell: Briefer, more forceful, and new charts. It did seem there were more Congressmen there than the last time, too.

So Congress discusses pressing matters like the subpena of a woman in a persistent vegetative state during prime hours, but reserves the trivial matters like fossil fuel depletion until late nights.

Makes perfect sense.

It makes me imagine a national Nero fiddling while the fossil fuels burned. So what you have to cut down the last trees to move the statue, move it! Easter World?

Nothing like seeing those charts with PEAK OIL on top of them...almost brings a tear to my eye...well maybe not ... 8O

Interesting that he said after his last speech some Canadian tar sands company invited him up to Canada--hes going to go soon. Another person was in his office today telling him fusion is going to happen.

Bartlett really laid it all out. If there are any listeners out there who did not get the message, they are sticking their heads in the sand. Do you think the rest of congress can get anything done about peak oil? Maybe major incentives to move into renewables and keep the grid going?

C-SPAN often archives video files on their site. Hopefully they'll archive this one.

Yes, should be on C-SPAN 1. Not a 100% deal, could still be moved to another day.

Looks like it is still on for tonight @ 10pm on C-SPAN 1:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')"Peak Oil" - Tonight--C-SPAN will broadcast LIVE on cable and the Internet Congressman Bartlett's third Special Order Speech about Peak Oil. It is scheduled for the third hour after legislative business is completed. The estimated start time is between 10:00 and 10:30 pm Eastern. Congressman Bartlett will discuss how the U.S. can overcome the threat to America's economic prosperity and national security posed by growing world demand for oil and consensus projections of future declines in world oil production.

I guess its a little later..

Unread postby UIUCstudent01 » Wed 27 Apr 2005, 22:43:19

I think it might be a little later (3 hours after the legislative branch finishes?)... as long as it isn't on when the Daily Show is on.. I don't care and neither does my roommate. Right now: Some lady talking about not cutting Medicaid.

(Aside: Daily Show has been putting on republicans and 'centrists' as of late - probably to get more viewership... :( or seem 'fair and balanced'. And a long time ago, he had that guy who said that we won't run out of oil in that one book.)

Edit: Doesn't look like its today.
