Traffic in US Metropolitans?

What's on your mind?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Aira', 'I')f I leave work during traditional busy times... like 5-6PM... the freeway is as crowded as it always is. But, if I need to leave late, 6:30 or later, traffic is so much better than it was when I've needed to stay late in the past.

I attribute it to less discretionary driving. The people on the roads between 5 and 6 are leaving work and will be on the road no matter what the price of gas is. By 6:30, most people are at home already. Instead of going out somewhere, they're staying home.

Good point. I leave ~6-6:30. Traffic is pretty bad (15-20 mph) on my route up past 7, but not quite as bad as 5-6 (5-10 mph).

Just checking the traffic map now it looks as bad as one would expect. I'll check up every 15 minutes and report back when I get home.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('NeoPeasant', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Grimnir', 'T')raffic hasn't slowed perceptibly, but the busses I ride sure have a lot more people in them these days!

I noticed that too. This morning when I got on, in addition to the mexican guy who's usually the lone passenger, there were two other people! Triple the usual number! Of course when I got on that figure went down to only double the usual number.

I noticed that three. Not only has the traffic on the 101 been better between Universal city and Downtown (approx 20 miles), the subway has been absolutely packed!

Moreover - when I take the train from the valley to downtown (approx 26 miles)(the beginning of this line starts in santa barbara (about a 1.5 hour drive)) it's standing room ONLY! I was shocked (well, not really) but when I started taking the train like 2.5 years ago, it was quiet, and a lot of room to stretch out. Once gas got over 2.00 a gallon (permanently) the train started filling up. The last 2 months with gas nearer to 2.50 a gallon, not only did the trains become sardine cans, but rates have gone up.

It was an eerie forboding when we saw the announcement, 7% this year, 5% next year, 10% the following year - quite disconcerting when the rail lines are already warning that the rates will be rising a guaranteed minimum each and every year...

It's such a shame public transportation in the US simply lacks the infrastructure to make a dent in this problem in probably all places but NYC.

I'm looking forward to moving downtown so I can use the train, but it's still to get to a job 15 miles north (assuming I keep the same job). I wonder if it will even be feasible when I move around the end of the year. Fortunately jobs I can walk do will be within the realm of reality - a reality I plan to embrace.

Well the 'regular' rush hour appeared just as bad (according to the map), but my experience in going home at 6:30 was once again miraculous. Probably averaged 65 mph.
