Moscow hotels ridiculuosly expensive just as coffee therein

names Moscow hotels the World's No. 1 most expensive, at USD 200 per night on average.
Compare that to USD 60 in USA, USD 100 in Switzerland, and USD 115 in London.
It's not just lodgings per se though, but food and products, too.
An average cup of coffee in Moscow is 1.5 times that in Rome, 2x Berlin and 4 times more expensive than coffee in USA.
N.B. A retirement pension in Russia is hardly more than USD 100 (one hundred dollars) per month in the best case.
The best thing you can do in this situation is, I guess, start selling coffee unless you can afford to own a hotel.

Seriously. I've paid more than $60 a night for Motel 6.

Anybody got an explanation for the Russian thing? Is it related to the strength of the Ruble?

What kind of monthly expenses does a retired person in Russia have compared to a retired person in the United States?


They pay for food, drugs and utilities. Food is expensive. I would guess pork is $15-18 per kg in Moscow. But its not them having too little, its your retirees having too much. Tell them to enjoy while they can.

The worst coffee I ever had was in an old Moscow hotel. It was weak, nasty looking, nasty tasting and it sucked going week after week without a proper cup of coffee.

The best coffee was in a camp in Cuba in the early 80's. Dynamite stuff and free too! Funny, the wonderful beverage comes from the same kind of bush no matter where you drink it, yet some nail it cranking out excellent coffee while others botch it terribly. Strange.

Most of Russian coffee comes from roasted acorns and rye berries, if lucky in some fancy places you might get some zikoriy with it. Mine worst coffee was at the Azov sea coast, substance from the above + made from extremely, amazingly horrendous local water .

Well, if the coffee is bad, then switch to drinking tea, as most Slavs do! I had a Polish girlfriend tell me the best tea she ever tasted came from a good but 2nd rate hotel in Moscow, from the floor Samovar. Why does everyone *have* to drink coffee is beyond me. I am not addicted to *having* to drink anything. Adapt, folks!

I'm starting to really like those special coffee beans you can get at the supermarket, I've been doing the vanilla and caramel flavored ones. I grind just enough for a pot at a time, and there is such a huge difference between that and pre-ground regular coffee ITS NOT EVEN FUNNY 8O
Perhaps the population would be less swayed to socialism if we had fewer examples of socialism from our "Free Market Capitalists". -----fiddler dave

I know what you mean, and don't know the source for the article. I recall though, like, auto 'blue books' in US might also quote very attractive car prices for the buyer or for the seller, whatever bias you are interested in.

And I can also say, you won't find a USD 200 stay in Moscow easily, EUR 200 is closer to reality. And the Rouble is at all-times low now.

As for the 'Russian phenomenon' thing, my guess it's perceived or real high risk economy, and, with penny paid labor, profit margins are tremendous. And they even manage to cut salaries and lay off staff now saying 'hey, it's recession', while running constantly at 'no vacancy' or near. But then, of course, the economy will be at high risk when things like this go on.
